EA Montreal Abandons Wii Titles In Favor Of “Blockbusters”

by Matt Bertz on Nov 24, 2009 at 06:33 AM

Boogie Superstar, we hardly knew ya.

Speaking to Edge Online, EA Montreal general manager Alain Tascan announced his studio is moving away from developing Wii titles in favor of more PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games in line with its machismo-laden, frat boy co-op game Army of Two.

"The Wii market is a little bit unpredictable these days," lamented Tascan. "We are going to focus on big, blockbuster-type titles. It doesn't mean that we are going to abandon the Wii, but as a studio we want to be ready for new challenges."

The changes fall in line with a new directive issued by EA CEO John Riccitiello, who revealed in a conference call earlier this month the company was shedding several game projects, laying off 1,500 employees, and closing Pandemic Studios in an effort to make the publishing juggernaut leaner.

"We’re just trying to adapt to the reality of today,” said Tascan. “I think the market is showing that if you don’t adapt fast enough then you’ll be in trouble."

Since the only company that seems to consistently profit from the Wii is Nintendo, do you think this is a smart move?
