Zelda Producer Hopes To Surprise Gamers At E3

Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma says gamers should expect surprises at next year’s E3 when Nintendo plans to reveal a wealth of information on the next installment for the Wii.

When asked about any changes or additions to the new Zelda title, Aonuma replied: “It is something we used to talk about with Mr. Miyamoto, and he and I agree that if we are following the same structure again and again, we might not be able to give long time Zelda fans a fresh surprise,” he told Official Nintendo Magazine. “So we have been trying something new in terms of the structure of the Wii version of the new Zelda game this time. I am really hopeful that people will be surprised with the changes we have implemented for this Wii version."

One thing that has been confirmed is support for Wii MotionPlus, which is all we really know for now. The rest of the details will be shrouded in mystery until next E3.

“I hope that we can show you something at the E3 show next year and it is something we are hopeful will be surprising,” Aonuma says.

  • Hm, but will a Legend of Zelda that departs from the regular formula be a good thing? I guess we will see.

  • Well, it is good that they both realize and agree that fans are tired of the same structure again and again.  I'm really hoping it is a fresh surprise.  Not just some tweaks to the same game formula they have followed.

We'll have to wait and see though.  I don't want to drink too much koolaid.

P.S. - Thanks for posting this Annette.

  • i don't own a wii,i never played a zelda game,i don't like the wii motion controls.

  • More cool Zelda adventures are always welcome!  I wonder if they're going to make it more old school...

  • @frozzted, maybe YOU are tired of the same old structure, but i still find it enjoyable to this game. and its not like they are bad games. Zelda games are awesome games.

that being said, not that i have a problem with the old structure, but something new would be cool. i just hope that they dont ruin what made Zelda great just because fans are whining.

  • Sweet.  This is great news for me.  I was one of the dissenters that thought Twilight Princess was too much of re-hash of games that have gone before.  I'm very excited by this news.  Zelda is definitely due for something fresh.

  • It's Zelda.

    It WILL be amazing.

    'nuff sed.

  • Return to the wind waker? No? Ah well, I can dream.

  • they said "Twilight Princess will be the last Zelda game as you know it."

that sound like a surprise to me.

  • I wouldn't mind a return to the semi-asometrical top-down 2D view we had on some of the originals, especially Link's Awakening.  I mean, New Super Mario Bros Wii is incredibly beautiful and nostalgia is a very powerful thing.

I guess we won't see that, though, since that is the direction they are taking with the DS Zelda games.

  • Surprize it's a cartoon!!  Remember that, that was the worst

  • Staff

My guess... New Zelda for Wii, new 3D Metroid for DS, and new Donkey Kong Country for Wii

  • Oh my God. Second month with the second Wii-exclusive game in a row. *** it, now I wish I hadn't sold my Wii for the Xbox that Microsoft must of loved to ban.

  • My guess: it is an Xbox 360 exclusive.

  • or an FPS

  • I know what the surprise will be. 4 player co-op!!! One player is Link, one is Zelda, the third person is Tingle, and the last player is....red Tingle! Cool beans!

  • I probably knew more before reading this.  Aonuma didn't shed any light on the game at all.

  • Yeah, not only do I hope that they start making big changes to the formula and the gameplay, what I'm really looking for are a new story and new settings that have never been seen in a previous Zelda game. I would like something that really deviates from the usual in terms of plot and characters, and wouldn't mind it being more cinematic in terms of cutscenes and action. What I'm really hoping for, though, is a great new setting with new dungeons (Fire, water, and ice dungeons...still? Really?)

  • sounds to me like the formula that they will use for this game is as follows:

Traditional Zelda+Wii Motion Plus Controls+[insert intensely awesome plot here]+New Spins=Millions of Dollars

  • When Miyamoto is involved things rarely go wrong so I'm looking foward to seeing whats in plan for the next installment.
