Activision Blocks MW2’s Controversial Mission In Russia

by Annette Gonzalez on Nov 17, 2009 at 06:15 AM

In response to rumors that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been banned in Russia over questionable content, Activision has released a statement that while the game has not been banned, the company has chosen to block the controversial airport scene in the Russian version.

“Reports that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been banned in Russia are erroneous. Activision only released a PC version of the game in Russia, which went on sale on Tuesday, Nov. 10,” the publisher said in the statement. “Other countries have formal ratings boards that we regularly work with. However, Russia does not have a formal ratings entity. As a result, we chose to block the scene after seeking the advice of local counsel.”

It is believed a patch has been released that restricts access to this mission. There is no word on when the console versions will hit Russia and whether or not they will have similar restrictions.
