Star Trek Online Taking Off On February 2, 2010

Eager Trekkies who are looking forward to beginning their own exciting journey across the final frontier won't need to wait much longer. Atari announced today that Cryptic's latest MMO, Star Trek Online, will launch February 2, 2010.

While Star Trek Online certainly is targeting a very specific audience that's sure to take notice, the new February release date puts them right in the midst of what's sure to be one of the busiest Springs for new game releases ever.

Perhaps even more interesting is that this will mark the second MMO from Cryptic in less than six months, since they just launched their long-awaited City of Heroes follow-up, Champions Online, in September. Of course, Champions launched with a number of gameplay and balancing issues that still needed to be ironed out and that are still being worked on today. Hopefully their experience with that game means that Star Trek Online's launch will go smoother and won't be rushed out the door.

  • Well, I thought the new movie was pretty awesome. This could potentially sell decently...

  • Jedi are better.

  • I've been looking forward to this game forever!!! It looks AMAZING!

Here's a great idea for an MMO: Star Trek vs. Star Wars. Choose a side. Enterprise vs. Millenium Falcon! Empire vs. Borg! The possibilities would be endless!

    P.S. I'm a Geek.

  • Star Trek is ta-tarted.

  • I'm not a big Trekkie, but after seeing the new movie, I may have to beam this game up, Scotty!

  • cool, this might actually be fun, or itll be a complete failure

  • will star trek ever be over?

  • This may exactly what fans of the franchise have been waiting for.

  • Unless it's free, I don't really care. If it's free, that's different.

  • I've never been a huge star trek fan, i did like the new movie though. I'm definitely not going to buy this game, just not for me.

  • Looks interesting. Kind of like an easier to master EVE.

I for one am going to wait for SW:TOR. BioWare does an MMO? Yes please.

  • Exciting to see this franchise get the recognition it deserves in the rpg genre. Still, I'll wait to pick this one up until after it's going strong.

  • I am a little curious as to the whole ship idea.  It sounds like everyone will have a ship, but with the amount of people on a server I can see space not being so... spacious right away.  And the models look like everything is after the whole Next Gen movies, so people expecting the new and improved Star Trek will have to wait and see.

  • I might have to check this game out...

  • I dont know bout you guys but Im looking forward to it.

  • Too many MMOs. I never thought a certain genre, would start to piss me off. And now it has, I cannot write the words I am saying in my head right now.

  • Sounds pretty interesting but I would definitly have to go with The Old Republic first.  I will be eager to hear though how Star Trek turns out.

  • I personally am really excited to see what happens with this game. The GI article from the October '08 cover was incredibly interesting. There are some features, like being able to fully customize your own ship and explore each and every deck as the Captain, could potentially be the most immersive Star Trek experience to date. The economy factor could make for an interesting twist to a monetary system, and the ability to form Fleets with other ships makes the inner Trekkie in me leap for joy. Also, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Admins will take control of Borg ships?

Don't hold me to that last one, but in any case, I can't wait to see what happens to the Star Trek franchise.

  • Star Wars is better in my opinion

  • I just don’t see this game succeeding, especially if Cryptic is trying to double up on MMO's.  They are going to stretch themselves to thin and instead of making one great game there going to make two decent games.  And decent doesn’t cut it in the MMO market
