New Media Reveals Big Spirit Track Twist

Nintendo let us know that all is well with their upcoming handheld Zelda title, and that it's golden for the December 7 release. While at it they also threw a slew of new media our way, including a trailer that dishes out quite a surprise.

So what is that surprise? In Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, the princess continues the time-tested tradition of being captured by villains, leaving Link alone against the world to save her. But this time the odds have evened out, as the princess is no longer willing to sit out the battle for her fate. Corporal form need not apply. The trailer reveals that the spirit of Princess Zelda is indeed the same specter that follows around Link in his quest to save Hyrule – taking control of the giant suits of armor known as Phantoms. Zelda will also keep up to speed with Link’s customizable train, aiding with wisdom that will help to unlock new areas, storylines and items. Better listen closely.

“More than two decades into its rich history, The Legend of Zelda has introduced another historic first for players as Link and Zelda unite to save Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Combining these unprecedented new story and game-play elements with the series' innovative touch-screen interface on Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi, the game is sure to surprise and delight new and longtime fans.”

Zelda’s always had the best of intentions, but her cryptic quests and habit of finding trouble often created more problems than she solved. Are you excited to finally have Zelda kick ass by your side?

  • First!
  • Anywho, this game might really promising. This is probably the only game that would want to make me get a DS besides Pokemon.

  • I should probably play the other Zelda DS games.

    First time? Yup. www.youtube.com/watch

  • Get it?  She's a spirit... of some kind.  And they're on tracks.

  • Another exciting DS title... I Can't wait for this one.

  • This title has been picking up steam.  I remember hearing that the line to play it at E3 was just as long as the line to play God of War 3.  Can't wait to play it.

  • I'm a sucker for Zelda games. Regardless of what anyone says, I rush to GameStop every time a new one comes out.

If it's still all stylus controlled like Phantom Hourglass was, then forget it.  I couldn't stand that in PH, almost the whole time I was wishing that I could play the game using traditional controls, and in the end I gave up on the game after like the 3 dungeon for that very reason.

The only times I liked using the stylus was with the ship's controls and the boomerang, otherwise the stylus mostly hindered my gameplay due to the fact that it feels relatively clumsy compared to the precision of a d-pad.  Heck, I would've been happy if I could've used the stylus exclusively for attacking/item use and used the d-pad exclusively for moving around.  Why couldn't they have implemented such an option?  Would it really have been so hard to add on?

In particular, trying to use bombs with the stylus controls was absolutely maddening in PH; I can't tell you how many bombs I wasted because I was trying to navigate Link while he was holding a bomb only for him to just hurl the bomb in the direction I was trying to get him to move in.

Now there are games on the DS like The World Ends With You where I actually get the impression that the game was meant for stylus controls, that it truly enhanced the gameplay significantly.  Then there's other games like PH where I can't shake the feeling that they could've just as easily mapped most of the game's controls on the d-pad and face/shoulder buttons, but they chose to go with stylus controls just to take advantage of the touch screen.

It'd be nice if in those kinds of games they gave gamers the option between stylus and traditional controls, kinda like they how they did in Mario 64 DS, but there was no such luck in PH, and I'm getting the impression the same will apply to Spirit Tracks.

  • Zelda is no stranger to battle and can usually hold her own.  I don't mind this at all.  Can't wait to play the game.

  • So instead of Navi hovering our shoulder for the adventure screaming, HEY, LOOK, LISTEN, it's going to be Zelda... :p

  • a game where link and zelda will be on the adventure together. yay we get the luxary knowing shes not kidnapped. i cant wait for this and i hope you get the option to name your train cause i would name it epona.

  • As long as it's not entirely touch-controlled, I'm all for it.  Phantom Hourglass's controls bugged the crap out of me, so please Nintendo...  make it with d-pad and buttons this time :-|

  • Link how you have changed.....

  • Wow, this looks great! I thought that the train would be a gimmick, and this does nothing to say otherwise, but the dungeons look fun! I can't wait to play this!

  • Finally! It's nice to have somebody be with you and help you fight all the way.

  • I have a feeling that this will be the best Zelda Handheld game yet.  I also like the idea of Zelda joining you on your journey.

  • dbull, not to criticize or anything, but you must've freaking sucked at the stylus controls if you thought they were horrible. I didn't once have a problem with them, at all. I thought they were done greatly, ingeniously, and overall it felt quite natural. My friends and I agreed that it was a great experience, and phenomenally took an existing control scheme and gave it a great twist. Not to mention it even accommodates left-handed people.

In short, I feel it was awesome. So yeah, I'm looking forward to this.

  • i have no money for handhelds (i only have Pokemon Platinum) for all my money is being spend on console games for the PS360. i only wish to buy this title eventually since Zelda games are my favorite. i still need to to get Phantom Hourglass.

  • I can't wait, the whole Phantom possession thing is pretty cool.

The one thing I wish they would do with the overall game is lower the difficulty just a tiny bit, because I loved playing the first game I just couldn't get past this one part no matter what, so I never beat it. :(
