Free Version Of Unreal Engine 3 Now Available

by Jeff Cork on Nov 05, 2009 at 03:33 AM

Epic Games has announced that it’s making a version of its Unreal Engine 3 toolset available as a free download at www.udk.com. The tools will give hobbyist developers, students and anyone else interested in working with the 3D engine a chance to do so without making any initial investment. Commercial applications developed using the free tools are subject to licensing fees, so it might be worth checking out the terms before getting too involved.

“I’m excited about the possibilities the Unreal Development Kit opens to those who are looking to get into the game business but don’t otherwise have the means to acquire world-class technology and tools like ours,” said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games. “UDK is Unreal Engine 3, which has been used to create games in a wide range of genres, as well as military simulations, 3D architectural walkthroughs, animated movies and more. Users are only limited by their imaginations.”

The toolkit includes the Unreal Editor suite, which bundles a variety of tools including Unreal Content Browser, Unreal Script, Unreal Matinee, Unreal Cascade, Unreal Lightmass, AnimSet Viewer, AnimTree Editor and an NVIDIA PhysX-powered physics system.
