Warren Spector Isn’t Done With Deus Ex

by Jeff Cork on Nov 04, 2009 at 03:21 AM

Even though he lost the rights to Deus Ex, game designer Warren Spector says he’s not necessarily done with the game. Speaking to Variety, Spector says that he was working on a game that was a spiritual successor to his sci-fi masterpiece before he started working on Disney’s Epic Mickey.

“There were and still are ‘Deus Ex’ stories I would like to tell,” he says. “That story is not done for me. [For the sci-fi game] I sort of filed the serial numbers off. ‘Deus Ex’ was very much a game of the millennium.”

Even if it doesn’t bear the Deus Ex brand, you could do worse than getting a game that explores similar game territory, designed by the same person. It certainly worked for 2K Boston’s Ken Levine, who created BioShock after developing the System Shock games.

When Disney purchased Spector’s Junction Point studio, it also acquired the rights to this undeveloped sci-fi project and another game that was originally pitched as a story arc for DC Comics.
