Jedi Teased In Star Wars: The Old Republic

We've been waiting for details on BioWare's take on Jedi Knights in its upcoming MMO while more mundane classes like Trooper and Smuggler got all the attention. The developer has finally put up some info on the class that 90 percent of their customers will be playing, and the news is...limited.

Unless you're dying to find out that the Jedi are warrior-monks dedicated to ideals of peace and serenity, you won't find much in the way of hard details in this release. Two tidbits were dropped, however, that shed a little bit of light on the Jedi's place within The Old Republic's fiction.

After the Treaty of Coruscant, which saw the galaxy divided into sectors controlled by the Republic and the Sith Empire, the Jedi have withdrawn to the remote planet of Tython. The order's reasons for this are unclear, and many Republic cognoscenti are openly critical of the move given the constant tension with the antagonistic Empire. How this will affect the plotline of player Jedi is unknown.

According to the official site, "Many Jedi Knights also wear parts or entire suits of heavy armor when going into battle." This implies that players will have more interesting options in gearing their Jedi than simply choosing an earth tone for their robe and color for their lightsaber. In an ideal world, this means more than, "Jedi Guardians wear armor because they tank, Jedi Sentinels wear light armor because they're hybrids, and Jedi Consular wear robes because they are spellcasters let their connection to the Force do the talking."

It says something that these tiny morsels of news are enough to get noticed. The Old Republic continues to look on track to be the Star Wars MMO we've always wanted (well, those of us who don't have dreams of making a virtual living by singing in a cantina. Go play Second Life already!).

  • I am really excited to see this game come to fruition. I've always wanted to see a good star wars MMO. I'm just really curious how it will play in comparison to the traditional MMO theme (WoW, Aion, EQ). I will definately be putting a lot of hours into this game.

  • Also, I hope that the jedi class isn't so overpowered that it makes playing any other class pointless. Honestly, what trooper could stand a chance against a jedi? It just seems like a balance issue to me.

I had high hopes that Warhammer would be awesome and would stop me from spending all my time in wow, and sadly it failed.

So now I'm relying on TOR to give me something new and compelling. I really hope they deliver.

I still have concerns about how they will deal with high-end raiding, but from what I have seen it looks like the other areas are well covered in their game design.

  • If I play it, I'll probably play a Jedi Guardian like I did in the KOTOR games.  This makes me wonder if they're going to have the sub-classes from KOTOR 2-Weapon Master, Jedi Master, and I can't remember the other one.

  • I agree that an MMO that will compete with wow is greatly needed. I thought Aion would do the trick but, unfortunately it didn't do the trick for me.

Also, thanks for the excellent coverage on breaking gaming news. I find myself checking the site more and more frequently just to catch the latest tidbits.

  • Hopefully the Jedi won't become like the Alliance. I need competent foes to dominate when I play as the Sith Empire when the game comes out.

  • The trailer for this looked fantastic. I wish my Jedi mind tricks worked on more than just guys at Gamestop. Dang.

  • Great, now the cantina song is in my head, thanks a lot.

@TheDarkKnigh7: That got a laugh from me, well done.

  • Dangit, the cantina song is in my head now too!

I am really looking forward to this game. My only peeves are personal, because for some stupid reason I cannot see anything on the site except a page that tells me to click "I Agree", which inevitably reloads itself every time I click it; and the fact that my gaming PC died.

  • gah! can't wait!

  • @iceap12 It was Jedi Watchman if I'm not mistaken.

  • hehe.... Jedi Rorschach?

  • sweet

  • I want to play this. I want to play this hard. I want to play this hard all night long...yeeeeaaaa.

  • I hope this game turns out better than WOW with a Star Wars skin on it, so far I think this game could compete with other MMOs.

  • Can't wait to play this game. I know that I'm rolling sith. All you jedi lovers can go back and play alliance.

  • This game might take up some hours of my life.

  • Seriously who wants to be a Jedi in this game?  The only cool Jedi is a dead one and Yoda.  I am totally going to be a Sith, and I would like to be a Sith Yoda if I can please, thanks.

  • Should be fun. After all who doesn't like jedi?
