Miyamoto Opens Up On Star Fox Series

Not even gaming great Shigeru Miyamoto gets it right every time. In an interview with MTV Multiplayer, Miyamoto expressed regret that the latest iterations of Star Fox perhaps didn't live up to fans' expectations. "I tend to forget those games," laughed Miyamoto. In a reflective mood, he continued, "I'm a big fan of the Star Fox games. Every time we make a Star Fox game I'm hoping people will enjoy it as much as I do. Of course, the goal every time is to try and make it more and more fun but, at least in Japan, the people that purchase the Star Fox games has decreased over the years.

Still, Miyamoto said the franchise isn't done yet. "But, we still try to make them more fun and hopefully people will see the appeal in those games."

Perhaps Miyamoto's own acknowledgment of the series' shortcomings means the company is working even harder to bring the franchise back strong. Rumors have been floating around that the company is working on a new Star Fox, but there have been no official announcements, and there hasn't been a new Star Fox adventure on a home console since Nintendo hired Namco to create Star Fox: Assault for the GameCube. The Wii remote (with Wii Motion Plus) would surely be an attractive option for flight controls, and perhaps a new developer can bring a fresh perspective.

What do you think? Is the series done or is it ready to be reinvented? What would you like to see?

  • I actually really liked Star Fox: Assault. Any major departure from that and I know I'll be disappointed.

  • Starfox on the nintendo 64 was an awesome game. The series just sorta fell off after that IMO. Unless Miyamoto takes over the development again I don't see the series gaining anymore ground. Only he can revive the series, with or without Wii Motion Plus!!!

  • mm. i'd really like the same playing style of star fox 64, only a different story ya know? like a REAL sequel, and not just a rehash of andross attacking the lylat system

  • Sweet

  • Loved it on 64 where it went full 3D - played the crap out of it, in fact.  But I don't think this is anywhere near Nintendo's top properties.

  • I like the idea of a new Star Fox game as I have always been a fan of the Fox, but they should really keep him, and his squad mates, in their Arwings. The platforming/3rd person shooter portions of the Gamecube games did not do this series justice. The vehicle combat is where this series should be focused.

  • I've played a lot of Starfox 64 via an actual cartridge and through a download of the game on the Wii's virtual console. Controlling the Arwing with Wii Motion plus, based on my experience with the "Island Flyover" mini game in Wii Sports Resort, might actually be pretty fun. I haven't played the "dogfight" mode in Wii Sports Resort (yet), though...

Anyways, I'd definitely be looking forward to a new Starfox game for the Wii.

  • I miss you star fox.

If they just stopped with their insistence on including on-foot segments, it could be great again. Just make a direct Star Fox 64 sequel and I'll be happy.

  • Motion control like Lair but done better would be pretty sweet!

  • i want to see a starfox game like starfox 64

  • Star Fox 64 was one of the best games on the 64. I beat it about 20 times going on every path. Yea the latest ones fell short and it was mainly because of the on foot segments.

  • Star Fox 64 was really fun and the GameCube one (forgot the name) that first came out was really fun also.

Hope Nintendo makes one for the Wii and glad to hear they are trying to make it better.

  • ctrl-F barrel roll.  Nothing.

  • Why can't Miyamoto give Nintendo's Press releases from now on? The PR-Friendly woman is so boring and plain.

Anyways, I would definitely like to see another star fox game. Star Fox 64 is up there on my list of best games of all time.

  • Bring back the fox please!

  • Assault was a fun but more arcade-ish take on the series, what with the implemented point system.  Make another game like Star Fox 64 and then we're in business.  Alternate routes, medals on each stage, LESS annoying co-pilots with bogeys on their tails, and bring back ANDROSS.

    Kay.  Thx.  Bai!

    PS.  Do a barrel roll!

  • A Star Fox 64 sequel would be nice. Nothing with talking dinosaurs or power rods or whatever that thing was. However, there are so many things that they could do with this game. They could even stylize it, similar to the recent borderlands, in order to save space, as well as cope with the Wii's power. An expansive online mode would be great, in addition to so much more.

It's so disappointing that there's so much that they could do with this series, yet nothing happens.

  • Star Fox is the best sci-fi videogame series around. Mass Effect doesn't compare. Star Wars doesn't compare. Star Fox rules.

That said, I wish there were more games in the series to show how awesome the series is.

  • Star fox 64 ftw, I hope they make a sequel.
