The lights are on
Legendary industry figure Shigeru Miyamoto recently spoke with Popular Mechanics regarding everything from his favorite Nintendo character to the future of gaming. Within the interview, the father of Mario mentioned a few interesting details regarding Nintendo’s next console. When asked whether Nintendo would continue to use motion-control with consoles following up the Wii, Miyamoto responded that the current system found a sweet spot with a broad audience and an affordable price-tag.“And while we don't have any concrete plans for what we'll be doing with hardware in the future,” Miyamoto continued, “what I can say is that, my guess is that because we found this interface to be so interesting, I think it would be likely that we would try to make that same functionality perhaps more compact and perhaps even more cost-efficient.”Is this simply the long awaited Wii HD that Miyamoto is talking about, or is he mentioning an entirely new console? Regardless, does a down-scaled, affordable system sound like what you want from Nintendo? Also, Miyamoto’s favorite character is Mario, followed closely by the Goomba.

How can a console grow even more compact than the Wii probably is? It'd have to be near the size of a handheld.
The Nintendo franchise died after the N64, gamecube and wii both suck.
What about Luigi? I think that as long as Oswald the Lucky Rabbit gets a chance at redemption, so should luigi!!
Basically, we can kiss any chance of the Nintendo of old ever making a return. They are officially sold out to the casual market.
I bought a Wii the day it came out in Nov 06. Considering how rarely I've played it since then, I doubt I would purchase whatever Nintendo comes out with to replace it. With the lack of quality games (and the over-abundance of crap), I really wish I'd skipped the Wii and waited for a PS3 (which will be my next system). At least I do have New Super Mario Brothers to look forward to.
I think he's talking about the next generation of hardware. Although since Nintendo's next console should have HD, I guess they could call it Wii HD.
Anyway, I'm not surprised by these comments. Nintendo doesn't care about having cutting-edge graphics and, frankly, neither does anyone who bought the Wii. Only hardcore gamers care about graphics and the only hardcore gamers Nintendo cares about is its fanbase. With Micrsoft and Sony both doing their best to appease the hardcore, I think Nintendo is right to give everyone else a fun, cheaper alternative to the next gen $400 cutting-edge hardware coming soon from Microsoft and Sony.
I can safely say that I will not be buying this console. After this generations performance, I think they have officially lost almost all of their loyal fans from before.
Is anyone really going to buy this new console? If their target audience is the casual market, are casual "gamers" really going to dish out another two hundered for a slightly smaller system? No, they'll stick with their wii that they will more than likely still putting shovelware on.
depends if I'll buy it or not. I will if it has any games WORTH playing
maybe a handheld DAM IT I HATE HANDHELDS
I love the wii. I detest the vast majority of games on it, but i love it. the motion controls are a fun novelty, but i miss the gamecubes precision using buttons. you used to press b to attack, not swing your arms wildly! the wii is marketed as a multi player system, but i generally wait until im alone to play, to avoid humiliation. i now have to take breaks from super mario galaxy to play xbox, just to relieve the pent up frustration of doing the correct thing, but dying because of the remote thinking i flicked instead of swung. really? my idea is to market the wii hd, or whatever it is he had in mind, and also another system with a controller similar to the gamecubes. or make it an option! i think if the classic controller worked with all games and motion was optional, nintendo would regain the hardcore gamers they have lost.
I don't really care what they do next. Yea, the Wii is no where near the NES, SNES, or even the N64, but it still has some great games on it. All buy any new Nintendo machine as long as they keep making Metroid, Mario, and Zelda games.
No, Miyamoto! we need a BETTER console, not a cheaper one! /facepalm
I believe Nintendo has finally assumed that there core gamers have left them for Microsoft and Sony and that the only people left are the girlfriends and grandparents.
Who gives a *** about HD?
Wii doesnt need HD or anything, it just needs better software.
I own a Wii, and if all the next system has is better graphics i dont know if i would jump off the go pick it up bridge. it would have to improve the controller(improve not CHANGE I love the motion controls) and MAKE IT PLAY CDS & DVDS!!!!!!!
I got a good feeling about this one :]
If the Wii gets anymore down scaled they might as well start on the next Nintendo console. Imagine the Wii, but with worse graphics than it already has. Disgusting.
