Facebook Gets Civilized

by Jeff Marchiafava on Oct 22, 2009 at 09:00 AM

A while back I wrote a blog post about the current state of gaming on Facebook. The post highlights some of the few good games that stand in stark contrast to the myriad attention-whoring, micro transaction-fueled non-games that are thriving on the social networking giant.

Next year, there will be a new game to add to the list – one that could possibly derail the Facebook gaming train from its rendezvous with certain doom. What conductor could be capable of such a noble feat? None other than Sid Meier.

Sid Meier announced the existence of a new Facebook version of Civilization via a welcome message on, you guessed it, Facebook. The game will be called Sid Meier’s Civilization Network, and will be going into a closed beta version of the game soon. How exactly Civ Network will play is a complete mystery, but Sid’s post states players will be able to “… create the world’s most powerful, richest, smartest, or just plain coolest civilization.” Meier’s post also promises: “The game will offer everything you enjoy in Civ in a fully persistent environment - you can play as much as you like, whenever you like, and it’ll be free to play.”

More development updates and messages from Sid Meier and the other Firaxis team members will be available on the game’s Facebook fanpage.
