Rocksteady Director Sefton Hill Is Still Talking About Batman

by Ben Reeves on Oct 19, 2009 at 09:33 AM

We admit it; we just can’t get enough of Batman Arkham Asylum. It’s been almost two months since the game came out, and we still find ourselves going back to Rocksteady’s masterpiece. The gaming site Gamasutra recently posted an interview with director Sefton Hill. Here are the highlights.

In the interview Hill talks about Batman’s history of bad games, how combat was one of the biggest design challenges for the team, and why there were no flying or driving sections in the game.

One tidbit we found interesting was that Hill has never played BioShock. He admits to being influenced by games like Zelda and Metroid, but given Arkham’s rich atmosphere, art design, storytelling structure we’re a little surprised to hear that BioShock wasn’t something of a role model for Rocksteady.

Later in the interview Hill said, “cutscenes shouldn't really be used for the action. That's what the game is there for. There's a lot of cutscenes in games that show you a lot of really cool action, but then you get to play the game and you don't actually get to do that.” We’d probably have to agree, given the fact that some of the most cinematic moments in Batman were times when we were controlling the action.

Good interview, but next time we hear Hill open his mouth he better be talking about Batman 2.
