Will Gears of War 3 Support Natal?

The answer is quite possibly. In a recent interview with OXM, Epic Game’s vice president Mark Rein made it clear that he’s quite fond of Microsoft’s new motion camera peripheral. Epic’s Unreal technology was used to power the tech demos during Microsoft’s Natal unveil at E3, so it’s possible that Unreal could become the unofficial middleware for Natal.

Rein went on to talk about how he thinks Natal could be used for traditional hardcore games, and how he’d like to see Epic utilize the technology for many of its upcoming titles. “It's definitely cool stuff and we will support it,” said Rein. “I think any future Xbox games we make will have some Natal support. We always want to have something that exploits the unique capabilities of a platform.”

Does that mean gamers will be throwing grenades with just a flick of their wrist in the next Gears of War? We can’t wait to find out.

  • Wow I just squealed like a little girl... Not only at the mentioning of Gears of War 3 AND Natal but the fact that we might see a really good hardcore series support each other. I am very interested on how this goes. Hopefully pretty soon I will be rolling around my house breaking things while trying out both of these.

  • hey anything is possible if it is done right. i'm interested in this natal. i'm sure there are going to be a lot of innovative games coming soon.

  • I'm not sure about this? I mean its the controler in your hands that keep you from...how do I put this...the Real world and the gaming world sepret...my view right now is inbetween, I think it would be neat But I like the controler in my hand.

  • Gears has been a fun experience for me (yet to beat one, though I'm so close in Gears 2 that it hurts). Motion for these types of games though will have to be approached very carefully. I love the idea of motion sensor cover system though. There's an arcade police motion sensor game I used to play at the arcade that I loved. If it used Natal like that, I'd be down.

  • Heres' something people misunderstand, Natal is not going to completely replace the controller, its only going to ba an addition so you can have the choice to play with or without the controller.

  • Using the new Natal peripheral would be a nice addition as well as a way to further seperate it from the mass of shooter games with a different take on it completly. I had read other articles talking about Halo 3 "full body on" (instead of the typical "hands-on", So i can just picture now, myself crouching on my living room floor moving forward slowly then standing up and moving my hand down, while my character "CHAINSAWS" the other player.

    Now that would be epic.

  • The Wii has proven one very important thing through the years. Motion controls are not revolutionary, they are limiting. I have yet to see one Wii title worth the price of admission that fully supports motion controls. I'm not saying that Natal won't revolutionize but I'm going to take a wait and see attitude.

  • crap my  360 has the red ring of death

  • I'm sure most games being made now and after natal comes out will in some way use it. I respect all three companies but it seems microsoft with natal is thinking way outside the box when it comes to motion control. If it does everything they say it will do and has no delay unlike their last attempt with a motion camera they'll have sony and nintendo having to do a lot of catch up in the motion control area.

  • Well this can either mean really good, or really bad. All depends on how they implement the two.

Either way I can't wait. Lets hope Gears of War 3 is the conclusion of the series, because I am really getting sick of the terrible endings. At least for Gears 2.

  • as long as its used in a good way.keepin fingers crossed.

  • Hmm im not quite sure how to feel about this combo. It could be good but when i dont want to have to do too much work while i play games if you know what i mean.

  • Althouh projecrt natal seems to good to be true, the potential for the technology is endless, i can definitley see gears 3 being an driving force in the sales of natal if compatibility is confirmed.

  • I highly doubt Natal will be integrated in any significant way in the game. At most, there will be some sort of mini game...

  • Why stop at throwing grenades? Let's use our heads people and our feet. I want full-body curb stompin'! How's about single-motion chainsawin'? The ceiling's the limit with this stuff. Don't ruin my core experience and bring it on!

  • i cant wait to see this

  • awesome!!!! GOW3 and Natal  .

  • this is an interesting concept but wat i cant wait to find out is how are we gonna be able to shoot? are we gonna be using our pointer finger and thumb?

  • I feel very skeptical about this. Sure it would be great and all if they made it work, but would I really want to deal with a motion controller/peripheral  for GoW or any FPS for that matter (I know GoW is 3rd) but still I feel it will not be used completely.

For example, look at Brawl, I can't play that game with the Wii Controller it has to be with a Gamecube controller. Why? Because I want it to be fast, responsive and accurate.

  • I don't know about this. It would be kinda cool, but I'm not quite sold on the cover based part with Natal.

In Gears 1 and 2, the people have their backs on the walls when they are in cover. To mimic this, people would have to turn away from the TV whenever they get into cover. Plus, the roadie run and jumping over cover would be hard to copy in real life without breaking something. And when you zoom in with a sniper, how would you indicate that with body movement?

If they can get it right, and show it off at E3 or something, that would be great. I would love to see it done right, I'm just not sure how it would work.
