What You Didn't Know About Overlord II

Game development often lasts for years. And in that stretch of time, studios have their fair share of ups and downs. From humorous game bugs to stress-relieving antics, Game Informer peers behind the curtain of game development. In this Tidbits installment, Triumph Studios laughs in the face of PETA, and makes a strong case to have its entire team institutionalized.

  • Every team member has had a minion named after him or her.
  • In Overlord II, the development team made it a goal to offend as many different groups and ideologies as possible, so nobody has to feel discriminated.
  • The game director/co-story designer likes to think the Overlord story is autobiographical.
  • On an arctic research trip, select team members practiced the art of seal clubbing firsthand.
  • Florian Greenhart, one of the whiney elf antagonists, is inspired by that emo guy in the Crying for Britney video, and also environmental protestors.
  • Triumph Studios is located in an 80-year-old hospital. It is said that an iron lung is used for developers to recuperate during crunch time.
  • During summer, cute topless students can be seen sunbathing on the rooftops near Triumph Studios.
  • During summer, productivity inexplicably drops.
  • The IT policy at Triumph is very strict, only the IT manager is allowed to view porn.
  • A company director broke his toe after presenting to journalists and dropping a whiteboard on it. He has since refused to allow any communication with the gaming press.
  • Over three million minions were hurt during the production and testing of this game.
  • One programmer constantly attempts to get sci-fi themes and robots into the game. He hasn’t succeeded (as far as the team knows).
  • Dutch food is known to give Englishmen terrible flatulence. At least that’s how the British producers of Overlord II explained their contributions to important meetings.
  • “Duvel”, “Leffe”, “Westmalle Triple” are not the names of industry legends who have productive and urgent advice to offer team members after hours.

  • Hilarious!

  • Haha, I didn't hear great things about the game, but they seem like a classy bunch of folk.

  • Woowww, lol, i want a minion too:)

  • WOW...topless students...lol

  • They seriously smashed in the skulls of baby seals in order to develop this game? I mean, this game was pretty weak if you ask me, and that's a shame that any developer out there would want to do that. I really don't see that as hilarious, and I'm not sure if the game was any better if I would have approved of it any more. I guess they had to feel powerful in some way, if they aren't physically powerful (being game developers and all), and since they aren't mentally powerful (having developed a cheap sequel), then I guess they're just slightly more powerful than baby seals and had to prove themselves as such. Yay for them.

  • Hahaha, priceless.

  • The game was quite critically acclaimed, it's a shame it seemingly went under the radar. Seriously, people need to check the demo out at least.

  • Best. Tidbits. EVER!!!

  • haha, tidbits own yet again! but poor seals !!!

  • Critically acclaimed? Since when is a 6.5 "critically acclaimed"? I mean, if you like the game, that's cool. I like a lot of games that aren't all that good, but I know they aren't. I like them anyway.

  • gaah, it is so sad coming back and commenting on older articles when it's this late - what can i say, I am a busy man. BUT I must say - Overlord II got a 75 metacritic... so put that in your pipe n' smoke it mr. blake steil... 75s == awesome games!
