Website Day 2

Status Report:
I really couldn’t have imagined yesterday going better than it did. And yes, I know there are still a fair amount of bugs out there and services people would like to have, and we are working as quickly as possible to get those into place.

In particular, we are working on the forums. We’ll be doing some updates this weekend (perhaps even tonight) to try and address the missing pagination, as well as give users more tools and space (we hope to fix those animated .gifs as well). “Mark all as read” is already up, for those that were wondering.

We are also aware of the current RSS feed problems. If that isn’t addressed over the weekend, it will be early next week.

How Ranking Up Works:
Throughout the last 24-plus hours I have seen a number of posts and also received a number of emails and conversations through the site wondering about how the ranking up system works. I wanted to take a moment to explain it a little further.

You score points by doing things around the site, like interacting on the forums or commenting on stories. There is a full break down located here.

As your score goes up you unlock new privileges. For example:

To write user reviews, you must be a member or subscriber and have scored more than 10 points through the site’s ranking system.

To get your blogs featured on the front page you must have more than 500.

To create your own groups, you have to exceed the 2500 point mark.

Notes:
We already have users writing up reviews and blog posts (user Matt Brooker has an excellent review up). You can tell he went and read the Game Informer Writer’s Guild tips, and his post shows it.

I highly recommend everyone head to the guild and follow those tips, as it really does make your work more impressive.

I want to thank everyone one last time for the feedback, and also let everyone know we have big plans for Monday: including the reveal of our November cover and some of the goodies that go along with it. We will also be posting all weekend (and working on the bugs).

Cheers,

Andy

I know we already have a number of people who have hit greater than 500 points, but after this weekend, we should have tons. I can't wait until all the blog posts from the community start popping up on the blog tab.

    It's gonna be great.

  • I am having a ton more fun with this version of the site!

  • I'm still getting error screens sometimes when I try and leave a comment and update my profile. It's more intermittent than yesterday though, and I've got a dialogue going with Sean so I know it's being worked on. Thanks for letting us help out in vetting the last few glitches and doing such a great job communicating with the community.

  • I really love how hands on the GI staff is being with the update. Sure, it may have a few kinks, but I'm all for it if it helps community involvement.

  • Keep up the great work, Andy. Thanks for the shoutout. :)

  • Thanks for the info. The process of ranking up seems easier to understand on this site than the previous one.

  • I love the site and am having a blast looking through it but I'm excited most of all for the November cover reveal. My fingers are crossed for Kingdom Hearts III.

I like how much simpler ranking up is.  One thing I wonder is are there other hidden ways to get points?  Looking at my profile, I have 680 points, but I only have 66 forum posts (equal to 330 points if all forum posts are worth 5 points, 1 blog post (which for some reason still isn't showing up under my profile stats) that's worth 5 points, and 5 comments I've made on other people's blog posts, which I presume are also worth 5 points each, another 25 points.  That should only add to 360 points total, so where did the extra 320 points I have come from?

  • Just so you know, on profile pages, you can't make apostrophes and when you do and save it, all of them are like this: #+$^& or something like that.

Just letting you know of a bug.

    re: the apostrophes in profiles

Yeah, we know about that one. It bugged me, because I couldn't list Ferris Bueller's Day Off properly.

If you want a totally homemade-looking work-around, use the back quote button (directly to the left of 1 in the number row). It's basically a backwards apostrophe, and the system doesn't seem to have a problem with it.

  • Thanks Andy! I am really digging the new site/experience.

  • Man...not a hate comment in the whole bunch...

  • The new rank system is much better than the old sites one. Except possibly the names of the ranks. I wanted to be "Totally Breakfast" one day. :P

But Andy, I have to ask, will there be a post rating system this time around? I have found myself reaching for the Kudos button several times already. Where is it?

  • I'm really excited about this site. I never payed attention to GameInformer until yesterday, I guess that makes me a conforming poser. I get the magazine though. The way I found out about this new version of the site was Philip Kollar, Tell him hi for me, I miss him on 1upFM/RebelFM.

  • I have to say, thanks for all the work and attention you guys are giving us.  Heck, a typo I pointed out was fixed before I new it.  One thing I would like to know is, when are you guys working on the magazine?  You guys must be busy!

  • Thanks. That basically works. Console button for the win.

  • I kind of miss the old color scheme. Mostly because it was easier on the eyes. Love the new format. It was about time you guys did this.

Thanks for the update Andy! Keep up the great work.

  • Thanks Andy, that clears up a lot of the remaining confusion I had with the site!

  • Overall, this is a much better version of the site, though a lot of pages take longer to load than before. It's kind of a bummer to have to stare at the status bar while things load... Overall, though, it seems to be quicker. The one gripe I have is that the reviews aren't really sorted chronologically at this point, probably as a result of when they were posted after the update. For instance, Sonic Unleashes shows up on the first page even though it came out... last year.

I didn't realize we could all do blog posts! That's exciting. Now I can rant about how annoying online-only co-op is and someone might actually read it!
