The lights are on
Hip-hop is a global business today, and unfortunately a lot of the people that worked so hard for so long to make it so have been written out of its history. One of those men died today, Mr. Magic (John Rivas). He died of a heart attack today. His age was unknown.Gamers know Mr. Magic as the DJ on the Wildstyle Pirate Radio station in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, but he is a legend in the hip-hop community and basically responsible for bringing hip-hop to the airwaves in the early ‘80s. Along with co-host Tyrone “Fly Ty” Williams, "Mr. Magic’s Rap Attack" was the first show that exclusively played rap music on air in a major urban market. He discovered producer Marley Marl (best known for his production on the album Mama Said Knock You Out by LL Cool J) and help found the Juice Crew, which featured such legendary rappers as Kool G. Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Roxanne Shanté, Craig G, and Masta Ace.He will be missed.
Here is a video for Whodini's "Magic's Wand" a tribute to Mr. Magic's then-popular show, which was featured on the Vice City soundtrack.

RIP Mr. Magic, October 2, 2009. You shall be missed.
RIP, sir. I'm sure you will be missed by many.
Rest in Peace Mr. Magic. As a passionate Hip-Hop fan, I appreciate the opportunities he gave to up and coming artists when Hip-Hop was still in its infancy.
i always really respected the way that rockstar goes out of its way to make really authentic soundtracks and give props to people like mr. magic -- although really influential -- aren't really well known to the general public...they could have had some actor do corny voice-overs for their hip hop DJ like a lot of companies would have, but they went out and got a real old school legend, and i'm sure he appreciated the exposure to a lot of kids that probably didn't even know who he was before vice city.
Did a wonderful job in Vice City.
Goodbye to yet another legendary DJ. Roc Raida just left us weeks ago, this is getting insane.
Baatin (though not a DJ a legend in his own right) left us way too soon as well. Hip Hop is really hurting right now.
mr.magic was a tragic loss to the hip hop world.he was a cornerstone for early hip hop to get on the radio and get airplay.these past couple of years have been pretty tragic years because of the losses the entertainment world has taken with the losses of a few great musicians and movie stars.TO ANYONE WHO HAS AN APPRECIATION OF HIP HOP I POSTED A BLOG ON MY PROFILE ABOUT MTV'S HOTTEST MC'S IN THE GAME LIST.SLIDE BY AND CHECK IT OUT FEEL FREE TO SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE TOPIC.
