TGS 09: New Version of RE:5 To Use PS3 Motion Control

More news straight from the land of giant robots, Sony announced today that they’re releasing a new iteration of Resident Evil 5 for the PS3. The game incorporates not only new content, but also the PlayStation motion control that’s coming this spring.

Titled Resident Evil 5: Alternate Version, the game is reminiscent of the Nintendo Wii port of Resident Evil 4, which allowed users to use the Wii’s remote to aim Leon Kennedy’s weapons. Will the game take full advantage of the new technology to justify a repurchasing of the awesome game? It’s worked in the past…

We talked to Capcom about the title, and they’re saying that there aren’t any concrete plans to bring the game outside of Japan. Considering how popular the series has been worldwide, however, we’d be shocked if it remained there. (Sony’s also undoubtedly going to be leaning onto publishers to support its motion-sensor compatible gadget this spring, which can only help our chances to play it here in the West.)

If tacking on some motion-based controls isn’t enough for you, there is a rumor that the game will be receiving some Jill Valentine-flavored content. The character’s voice actress recently spoke with IGN about some recent voice work she did, and also alluded to a “director’s cut” type of RE5 project on the horizon. It turns out that horizon is Spring 2010, the same time Sony’s motion controller is due out.

However this turns out, there is no such thing as too much Resident Evil. Unless someone is involved who’s name rhymes with Villa Nova-stitch.

  • i guess i might as well get this edition since the standard edition is still 60$ and not forced to use sony's waggle or whatever they want to call it.

  • Great i havent even played this game and they are allready coming out with another version. sounds good though, resident evil 4 in the wii was a great game.

  • I was SOOO disappointed with RE5. Just didn't live up to the hype for me...

  • I agree with Michael. I was extremely disappointed with RE5. It's like they looked at RE4 and just removed every single good part(combining treasures, that awesome salesman, nighttime) and kept all the bad parts(antiquated controls, an annoying chick that follows you around). It's baffling to me that the co-op in that game is essentially required because if you want to play alone that game was borderline terrible. Also I'm a little confused as to how you are going to be walking around with the motion controller. It's not like Sony has a nunchuck attachment.

  • Sony does have a nun chuck it's called the Dual Shock 3! this was how they moved in the demo of this they showed @ Tokyo Game Show, and as someone who has been holding it in one hand and pretending to use the stick for navigation from time to time since I heard about this, I can say it feels great to me and I think it's a great way to add functionality without the need to buy even more hardware. Haven't bought this yet because my brother owns it and I just borrowed it from him, but I would probably buy the motion control one if it releases stateside.

  • God the above screen shot looks like crap now! That's the first one they released for RE5. If this extra chapter doesn't come out on xbox 360, then I'll have to dip into the PS3 version.

    My gamerscore just passed 40k!

  • Kool but i already bought RE 5 for the 360

  • sweet might look into buying this

  • I own the wii port of RE4, and although its a completly different system, im confident that the ps3 alternative version will be awesome.

  • Um... seriously? I think adding motion controls is a bad idea...

  • I'll probably buy this.

  • Wow this game was great and if the Ps3 Motion Control goes well this should be amazing

  • sounds cool,i guess

  • The original is a great game.  I'll be tempted to get this version if I get to play Jill's side of the story along with EXTRA content.  I have the versus mode add-on and would like that to be compatible as well.

PLEASE don't let it be fixed default on MOTION control.

  • This is the first confirmation I have heard of a game for the PS3 motion control.  I wonder what else will be released for it.  I have held off on buying the PS3 Eye camera since there haven't been any games for it. Has a price point been revealed for the motion control (or a camera/motion control combo) yet?

  • I guess its cool for people to have yet to get the game, but as some one who has already beat it, i wouldnt buy it again.

  • Hmmm... it sounds like it may be a hit using the new controller, hopely it comes rich with content as the resident evil4.

  • cool RE5 seems like a good game to implement motion controls.  Sorry Nintendo but the PS3 might just steal your Mojo, and make it better.

  • They're going to have to bring a fair amount to the table to convince gamers to buy the game again. It's been my experience that when a game is re-released on the same console the true motive is guinea pig a proof of concept and to implement 'afterthoughts'. Sometimes it's great and worth it, but sometimes it isn't. Fortunately RE5 was a great game with great execution... but the down side is that if the motion controller flops with other titles or comes off as too gimmicky then half of the point becomes moot.

  • I guess. I'm not excited though.
