TGS 09: New Super Mario Bros. Wii Release Date Announced

The release date for New Super Mario Bros. Wii has finally been confirmed; the new Mario game is set to hit retail shelves on Nov. 15. New Super Mario Bros. Wii will give players the chance to side-scroll solo or with up to three friends for multiplayer action. In addition, this game marks the start of the much debated “demo play” feature.  This allows players to pause the game when having trouble and the game will take over and finish the level. Press a button at any time to resume play.

“In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they’re ready,” said Shigeru Miyamoto in a June interview with USA Today. “And yes, we’re looking into this for future games, too.”

This new feature can help introduce younger gamers to the chubby plumber we’ve all grown to love. But does the platform jumping, ground pounding, pipe traveling, mushroom fiend still have what it takes to keep up with the competition? We certainly hope so.

    Price cut + new Mario game + kids = new Wii?  Christmas may have just become even more exciting...

    But this "demo play" feature - doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of playing?  Kind of kills the whole point.  In my day, we had to actually lose and get better to win.  Kids these days.  Whipper snappers.

    I agree with Sean, kids won't improve like they used to with demo-play.  Plus there's no sense of discovery.  That point where you're finally playing past where you were stuck and you feel out of control with excitement, nothing beats that.

    Although I may have broken fewer controllers as a child with this...
