Will Delayed Triple-A Titles Be Further Delayed?

Have you just now come to terms with the fact many of the most anticipated games of this year have been delayed until Q1 2010? Was the news so devastating that you didn't leave the house for a week and drowned your sorrows in several dozen pints of Häagen-Dazs? You may want to swallow that last sip of coffee before you read this next bit, unless you like spit-takes. An important-sounding person in the video-game industry thinks the postponed triple-A titles of early 2010 may be pushed back even further.

Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, is the man responsible for the dark prophecy. Guillemot knows this scenario too well, with Ubisoft's own Splinter Cell: Conviction's development sentence extended after its original release window of holiday 2009. The game sits among other anticipated releases such as BioShock 2, Bayonetta and Heavy Rain.

“We now have a situation where there are a lot of good games due for release in the first half of next year, but I think some publishers will move again,” says Guillemot. Publishers delaying big-budget games just so they don't have to compete with other hot titles? Pish posh.

“The first quarter of 2010 is looking pretty crazy," the CEO continues. "So I expect some movement from the other players – some of those delayed games will be moved again.”

Hopefully, Guillemot is dead wrong here. We definitely understand publishers and developers want to get the most out of their release dates, but nobody wants to wait until Q3 2012 for a game that's been done since last May.

  • Another possible delay for Splinter Cell: Conviction? Golly, this game is having the worst luck.
  • Guillemont is right. Games will be moving from Q1. I already see a couple slipping through the cracks.
  • You know what, as a huge gaming fan I have one thing to say: good. My wallet can't take this anymore. The time and polish will hopefully produce amazing games and by then I can build up some cash. Also, and perhaps most importantly, I will still be playing the hell out of Modern Warfare 2 whenever the big 2010 games finally see the light of day. No rush.
  • My heart can't handle anymore delays... =(

  • I wonder if any of this is just to safeguard profits with powerhouse MW2 coming out.

  • thank god they didnt delay MW2

  • Splinter Cell: Conviction delayed again?? This game better be good when it comes out, this is like Metal Gear 4 and Killzone 2 all over again

  • Publishers need to cut the crap and release their games. If they all keep pushing back dates to help circumvent competition, we'll see these titles start to get canceled.

  • NO MORE DELAYS!!!!!!

  • I so not begrudge exclusives, but I do think it is wrong to take a series that has been multi platform for it's entire history and then snub the other gamers out there. Maybe just Maybe the delay with let them re think the exclusive deal. Think about it. Price drops, sales numbers climbing etc. If not, just tell me if it is any good. My wife and I love this series.

  • Another delay for Conviction. Great!!!!1

  • but they really didnt say they was gonna delay splinter cell it might be another game or soment plz dont shut down the hopes of this seeing the day of light

  • if they are delaying games to try to make more money i can understand that but i hope they're not stopping game production after that. they should at least leave it open to polish by the artist. If they've already printed the games they shouldn't push it off for a year.

  • Delays Suck!!!  By the time these come out They'll be obsolete on my PS4!

  • If they keep moving them back, the games will lose their hype and people won't be as interested.

  • No DONT DELAY MAFIA 2 SPLINNTER CELL CONVICTED PLZ DONT.

  • We all know they delay it so they will not go head to head with COD 2 or UNCHARTED 2.Now in 2010 they will go head to head with HEAVY RAIN and BIOSHOCK 2.

  • While I'm waitng i'll just save some money, play another one of the thousand wii games or read a book.

  • More time for me to save up some cash.

  • I don't think it is a bad idea to delay games, based on shipping to other games. If you have 4-5 major titles shipping within 60 days, you don't necessarily want to ship yours too. And besides further delaying the game can also benefit it as well. Think of it as a little more time for the company to work out the kinks, and get the proper advertising for it.
