Blog Herding – The Best Blogs Of The Community (January 4, 2018)

by Game Informer Editorial on Jan 05, 2018 at 01:03 PM

We've been on a long break, but it seems that the blogging community kept writing while we were on vacation! It's a new year of blogs, so dive in!

Community Blogs For December 21 – January 3:

What Game(s) Disappointed You the Most in 2017?
ConnorTrinske goes a different route than normal, and instead of writing about great games of last year, writes about some that disappointed. Two sequels and a game that was highly lauded made the list. There are some solid points made. What were some games that disappointed you?

The Undisputed Best Games of 2017
Flipping the narrative, BethesdaWare writes about what many thought were some of the best games of last year. I'm surprised Mass Effect made the list, and wow does that gif of the new Spidey game have me in awe. I have been avoiding spoilers for the game, but I'm glad I saw this. I now know why people are so hyped.

Looking To The Future
Short and sweet best describes McNutty891's blog looking to 2018. And also bittersweet. Our blogger is moving away from writing and putting more time into a YouTube channel. You will be missed!

The Best Games I Played in 2017
MightyMagikarp adds to the "best of" lists, coming up with 10 of his favorites. Thank you very much for spoiler warnings, as I haven't completed all of these! And wow is this list pretty darn good. I feel like more people need to be talking about Resident Evil VII.

My Top 20 Games of 2017
Keeping the list train moving, Enuo is here with 20 games that impressed in 2017. This is without a doubt a list that shows off what 2017 was all about in the gaming world. I haven't heard of a couple of these games, but even they sound quite good. Your move, 2018.

My Retro Game Awards 2017: Winners
GerardoExber is blogging like a mad man as of late, and this one really stuck out thanks to it changing up from a 2017 list to one full of games from any year. And I also recommend you play Inazuma Eleven, Gerardo. Though I wish it leaned a little more into the tactical gameplay, it's a really fun game.

I Don't Think Breath of the Wild is My Game of the Year
If you don't already know, Haley Shipley is a huge Zelda fan and the local blogosphere authority on the series. So even though Breath of the Wild – my favorite game of 2017 – isn't hers, you know she has some good points to back up her opinion. And this blog is exactly that: A deep dive into why Zelda didn't take top spot, and what other games did better.

In 2017 Naughty Dog Invited Us All Into Uncharted
This is a very good personal blog from LetMeGetToACheckpoint, which describes how something as simple as offering subtitle options before the opening scene of a game can make a big difference for deaf players like her. That's not something most of us probably even think about, but it's wonderful that Naughty Dog did.

Community Reviews:

Doki Doki Literature Club Review: A Very Pleasant Surprise
I can't read too much into this blog since I haven't played the game yet, but writergirl2394 is yet another fan of Doki Doki. Lots of people have been praising this game. I'm still not sold on it, but will have to check out this romance game that apparently has a great twist.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
Zack Burrows writes, "Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is a masterful game that stands out as one of 2017's best and most original. It tackles the subject of mental illness in a way that doesn't feel cheap and exploitative, and Melina Juergens delivers one of the best performances in all of gaming." If you're still not sold, dive into this review.

Writing Challenge:

We haven't had a lot of response to these lately. What do you all think? Should we try to revive this feature? Should we bring back playdates? Something different? Let me know what you think in the comments!

I hope you enjoy the blogs! Please contact me via my Game Informer page or on Twitter at @LouisGarcia12 with any blog news or playdate suggestions.
