Hands-On With Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption

by Daniel Tack on Sep 03, 2017 at 06:30 PM

Imagine a game that was similar to core action/RPGs like Dark Souls (I know the last thing people want to hear is games compared to Dark Souls, but it actually fits here), but that didn't have regular enemies or traditional stages. Just bosses. That's Another Indie's Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption, and it looks awesome. At PAX West 2017, I went hands on with several boss encounters (there are 7 total bosses in the game) and put my skills to the test. The bosses are almost like MMORPG-raid bosses in a way, featuring multiple phases, summoned minions, changing environments, and more.

Here's the part that makes Sinner so interesting - you can do the bosses in any order you desire. However, every time you kill a boss you must make a sacrifice. This could mean losing health, taking more damage, losing the ability to use special skills and items, and more. So basically, by the time you have downed 6 of the 7 bosses, your character is going to be an absolute wreck, so "charting a course" through the various bosses is essential and makes you come up with a plan.

In my time with the title I got to take on a giant knight that sports an enormous tower shield and a crow wizard that spread poison and blight across his entire arena, complete with poison pods that burst open and made me pay attention to everything around me - there were lots of danger zones in that arena. The knight battle felt slightly more traditional, attempting to stay away from the huge hulking armored man and get some shots in.

At the end of the day, both bosses killed me but I was picking up their mechanics and getting the hang of the encounters. However, it's going to be much more interesting when players start attempting to discover the correct "order" to get through the battles with manageable debuffs. That should be a lot of fun, and I can't wait to play more.

Sinner is coming to PS4, Xbox One, PC, and maybe (the developer stressed maybe!) Switch in early 2018,
