Our Bold E3 2017 Predictions For Third Parties

by Game Informer Editorial on Jun 01, 2017 at 04:00 PM

It's that time of year again. E3 is just around the bend and with that in mind, speculation and rumors are filling the air. This is true for us at Game Informer as well, and today we're grinding our feet into the ground, standing akimbo, and boldly proclaiming our predictions for this year. We're starting off with third-party predictions today. The Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo prognostications will come in the days that follow.

DICE Showcases Star Wars Battlefront II's Campaign
The Battlefront reboot had good gunplay, but the content was sparse and lackluster. EA and DICE seem to be trying to make up for that in Titanfall 2 fashion, filling the second go round with more content and a singe-player campaign. Though EA already revealed the topsy-turvy Fight For The Empire story setup and a look at protagonist Iden, we still haven't seen that much of the campaign itself.

Seeing as Battlefront II is due out in November, it's likely we'll be seeing more of the game in action during E3. And given that the campaign is what people are most curious about, it stands to reason that will be what EA is showing off.

Probability: Likely

Cyberpunk 2077 Debuts At E3
Gamers everywhere have been eagerly awaiting any morsel of detail about CD Projekt Red's sci-fi game since its teaser dropped in 2013. Little has emerged since then, but the incredible quality of The Witcher III has people more excited than ever for what the Polish studio has up its sleeves. It's been a while, and with Gwent public beta launched and The Witcher III DLC done, we might be getting a new look at the game soon.

Probability: Long Shot

Marvel And Telltale Reveal A Defenders-Based Game

Telltale has already set to work with the Marvel license, jumping headfirst into a series based on Guardians of the Galaxy. However, there's still a plethora of Marvel properties for the narrative-focused developer to tackle. If Telltale and Marvel are looking to keep in-step with the MCU, as the Guardians game suggests, then a series based on one of the Netflix properties (Jessica Jones/Daredevil/Iron Fist/Luke Cage) seems likely given how close The Defenders is to release.

Probability: 50/50

Firaxis Announces XCOM 2 Expansion
The original XCOM launched on consoles with a beefy expansion packed with new enemies, modifiers, and other changes that made it feel like an entirely different game. Given Firaxis Games' love for massive expansion packs (the developer is also in charge of Civilization and Beyond Earth) it would be unsurprising if a new sizable expansion pack for XCOM 2 is showcased this E3.

Probability: 50/50

Remedy Announces New IP
Quantum Break was well-received and performed well, but it sounds like Remedy isn't returning to time-bending any time soon given Microsoft's comments last year. Remedy has also cast doubt on whether we'd see Alan Wake return, and given that title was just pulled from digital storefronts, a return of our grumpy writer seems even more unlikely now. However, Remedy has been working on two projects for a bit (and one of them already has a publisher) so it seems likely we might get a peek of at least one of them.

Probability: Likely

BioWare Takes The Veil Off Project Dylan

BioWare's new project, codenamed Dylan, has been under wraps for a while now. We still don't know much about the game, but EA executive comments suggest it incorporates live service concepts in a way similar to Destiny. The project was recently pushed back to 2019, so it's a ways off. However, we're willing to bet that BioWare will at least show off gameplay or concepts from the game to give fans something to chew on in the meantime.

Probability: Long Shot

Arkane Announces Dishonored 2 Expansion Featuring Assassin Daud
The original Dishonored's expansion series featured the gruff assassin Daud in a story that ran parallel to protagonist Corvo  and was generally considered to be some of the best offerings of the original game. Dishonored 2 drops a few hints toward the end of the game that we might be heading out in search of that stoic familiar face once more. Given that Dishonored 2 was such a critical darling, and that Bethesda enjoyed success with both the expansions for the original Dishonored and Wolfenstein: The New Order, it seems likely we'll see a Dishonored 2 expansion sooner rather than later.

Probability: 50/50
