Blog Herding – The Best Blogs Of The Community (September 22, 2016)

by Game Informer Editorial on Sep 22, 2016 at 06:01 AM

We've got a Blog Herding heavy on community responses this week, which is fantastic!

Community Blogs For September 15 – September 21:

Top 10 Boss Battle Themes
I still hum Final Fantasy VII boss battle music to myself, so of course I enjoyed Refle's list of boss battle themes that get the heart thumping just before you start chucking fireballs and slinging steel.

Video Game Observations from a Kid
Born4this allows his 5-year-old daughter to play some video games, and we are the lucky recipients of her opinions on the awesome Lego City Undercover for Wii U. His daughter's best quote? "She's a pretty girl...too bad he ran her over."

Remembering the Red Ring of Death: A Media Major's Podcast Companion Piece
Just reading Thomas Loughney's title is enough to give me upsetting flashbacks of when my console, which had been fine for years, finally red-ringed on me. If you'd like to hear his tale of the sinister Red Ring of Death, give this a read.

Writing Challenge Responses:

Community Writing Challenge – Seeking Perfection
Our blogger Jolt the Cynic sets the tone of this blog by saying that nothing is truly perfect. So instead of writing about how to craft the perfect game story, he writes about some simple changes that could have made some games even better, particularly when it comes to the end of the game.

Community Writing Challenge: A Few Tweaks for the Perfect Ending
It's hard to feel 100-percent content with an ending, and like David Gaider once told me in an interview, perhaps it's more about the characters and their journey. But Haley Shipley does love some game endings, and writes that some are nearly perfect.

Community Writing Challenge: A Change of Story, A Change of Pace
Immersion is key to video games for GerardoExber, and so too is a good ending. That's why he writes about just how badly Metroid Other M failed (please give us a traditional Metroid game, Big N).

Community Challenge: Changing the Tone
A lot of what Joyful Penguin would like to see makes sense, though I think Chrono Cross is amazing in its simple ties to Trigger. But for real – give me better a narrative in Destiny. Just...come on, Bungie. Like our blogger writes, this is a terribly awesome world that is just dead.

Community Writing Challenge: The Games That Need Changing
As far as endings go, StarterPack would have liked more for BioShock 2's ending, as well as some others that just don't do enough with what they have. I can't remember BioShock 2 that much aside from one of the fantastic DLC pieces, but I'm always a fan of more ending material.

Community Writing Challenge:

What are some of the weirdest turns franchises have made? The most obvious current one is pitting Snake against zombies. Even if they were weird, did you like them? Hate them? I was a fan of combining Yakuza and zombies. It just worked.

Community Playdate:

Nothing this week.

I hope you enjoy the blogs! Please contact me via my Game Informer page or on Twitter at @LouisGarcia12 with any blog news or playdate suggestions.
