Our Bold E3 2016 Predictions

Everyone gets to be an armchair quarterback at E3, tearing apart presentations, making fun of demos, and occasionally gushing over the times when everything goes right. Another big part of the show happens before the doors even open, as people do their best to guess what's ahead. Today, we're planting our flags into the ground and giving you our boldest predictions for E3 2016.

Mass Effect Andromeda Is Similar To Destiny (But With Storytelling)
Commander Shepard’s tale ended with Mass Effect 3, and our hunch is that it also marked the end of it being a single-player focused experience. The original trilogy featured a robust multiplayer mode, and we wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the future of the series incorporates multiplayer into the campaign, similar to how Bungie did with Destiny. But BioWare being BioWare, we’d also expect them to deliver narrative in a much more satisfying way.

Gwent Returns As A Standalone Game
The Witcher 3 featured huge worlds to explore, which made us feel a little guilty for spending so much time in taverns playing its in-universe CCG. The card game has been recreated in physical form for a few preorder bonuses and promotions, but it’s best played digitally. We’re predicting that, sensing the game-within-a-game’s popularity, CDProjekt Red announces a standalone version of Gwent is in the works, with expanded decks and a few new gameplay tweaks. 

Warner Montreal Reveals A Suicide Squad Game
The Suicide Squad movie is coming this August, and we wouldn’t be stunned to learn that Warner Montreal has been working on a game featuring the mercenary troupe. Several years have passed since the studio’s Batman: Arkham Origins, and it’s been working on an unannounced new title for PC and current-gen consoles. As long as we don’t have to fight Deathstroke again, we’re good.

God Of War Returns With A Norse Twist
A few months ago, some leaked art showed what looked like Kratos interacting with Norse touchstones like the Rainbow Bridge. Since the God of War hero has essentially scrubbed the Greek pantheon clean, it makes sense that he would jump realms and take out his rage on a whole new cast of gods and mythological beings. Or has another hero taken on the mantle, and is he simply wearing the familiar paint? Regardless, what better way to announce such a bloody mashup than E3? 

Sucker Punch Shows Off Its Spider-Man Game
Reports of another Spider-Man game popped up recently, based on an entry on a stuntman’s online resume and a hearty dose of speculation. We’re happy to keep believing, and we bet that Infamous developer Sucker Punch is, indeed, working on a game starring everyone’s favorite wallcrawler. The timing couldn’t be better, with the character hot off the heels of a great showing in Captain America: Civil War and next year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. 

Quake Returns
Since acquiring id Software in 2009, Bethesda has published successful new entries in the Wolfenstein and Doom series. What about that other big name in id’s lineup? Expect to see a return of the arena-shooter Quake at E3.

Kingdom Hearts III Gets A Release Window
Square Enix has been teasing the Kingdom Hearts faithful for years now, but this E3 they’re going to give up the goods. Well, sort of. Expect to get a release window during the show – not necessarily a date, but a window that should at least provide guidance on how to dress when you wait in line to pick up your copy.

Red Dead Gets Remastered
People are working themselves into a lather at the thought of playing a new Red Dead Redemption game. While it’s great to think about a new Wild West adventure from Rockstar, we think the reality will be a little different. We’re gunning for a remastered version of Red Dead Redemption, with the same upgraded visuals and increased wildlife density that Grand Theft Auto V’s HD remake got.

Assassin’s Creed A No-Show, But New Far Cry Pops Up
Ubisoft has made it clear that we aren’t getting a new Assassin’s Creed game this year, but we don’t expect anyone from the company to even acknowledge the series’ existence at the show. Meanwhile, the announcement of a new Far Cry game could help soften the blow for players looking for more open-world adventures.

Capcom Goes All-In On Zombies
Capcom’s long had a thing for the undead, but expect to dodge lots of actors in zombie costumes if you pass by their booth. In addition to showing off more of Resident Evil’s Umbrella Corp spinoff, you can bet on a new numbered entry in the series, more remakes, and the return of the Dead Rising franchise as an Xbox One exclusive.

EA Shows Three Star Wars Games
People like Star Wars, right? Keep an eye on EA if you want to play in that universe. In addition to seeing more Battlefront DLC, we’re betting on the reveal trailer for Visceral’s Star Wars game as well as word that our old friends at BioWare are returning to a galaxy far, far away in a whole new adventure.

XCOM 2 Comes To Console
XCOM 2 is a great game, but unlike the first one, it’s only available on PC. That will be changing soon.
