Two Heads Are Sometimes Better Than One – Playing Cho’gall In Heroes Of The Storm

by Daniel Tack on Nov 07, 2015 at 12:25 PM

At BlizzCon 2015, I dove in to play three new Heroes of The Storm characters, but crazy two-player controlled Cho’Gall stole the spotlight. Greymane was a neat take on a mixed ranged-to-melee hero that has a lot of cool gunplay and the ability to get in and out of combat, but there’s nothing like suiting up and playing “You drive, I’ll shoot” with Heroes of the Storm’s newest answer to shaking up traditional hero design.

Cho’gall requires two players to control, and hence will take two of your five player slots when you’re putting together a team.  Players can’t purchase or unlock Cho’gall via standard methods, in order to get him you’ll have to play a few games as the two-headed terror with someone who already possesses the hero via BlizzCon. In this sense, he’s also Heroes of the Storm’s first “viral” hero.

Cho’gall is divided into what boils down to pilot and gunner roles, but working together with the other player is absolutely critical to take advantage of this character’s significant presence and power. While a well-handled Cho’gall can decimate multiple opponents and come out almost unscathed, his power, even when played well, can be a double-edged sword. Since Cho’gall takes up two hero slots but is only one unit, this makes him especially vulnerable to crowd control and other effects that take a hero out of the action. When you and your partner sync up, it's an incredible feeling and a ton of fun.

Playing Cho’gall is going to be a serious learning experience and possibly a frustrating one if your friend likes to troll, because you’re locked in with each other for better or worse. However, Cho’gall has some visual cues that your partner in crime can pick up on to better land attacks and plan around, meaning you’ll still be able to handle the bizarre beast without voice communication. I’m also really looking forward to how Cho’gall will shake up the professional and eSports scene – the Lost Vikings were interesting, but watching a perfectly coordinated Cho’gall on the grand stage promises to be an incredible spectacle.

I’m looking forward to playing Cho’gall with some of my friends and guildmates, and plan to enjoy the inevitable laughs – and tears – that come as a result of playing this creative and unique hero. The fact that this hero even exists shows that Blizzard is willing to really break up the established MOBA-hero template and go way, way outside the box, and I can’t wait to see what they think of next.
