Blog Herding – The Best Blogs Of The Community (September 10, 2015)

by Game Informer Editorial on Sep 10, 2015 at 06:04 AM

I'm going to be honest: all the blogs about Gears of War have me as happy as when I first perfected the active reload. My, what a game series. Anyway, we have a ton more blogs about a ton of topics, so dig in.

Community Blogs For September 3 – September 9:

Top 10 Badass Things That Characters Did in Games...
Blogger StarterPack gives us some great moments in this list. I mean, the end of Halo Reach and The Last of Us...my goodness my home office is dusty. I mean, why else am I tearing up? Geez, guys. Other moments are more intense and less emotional (or maybe I'm just an emotional gamer), but each one has its merits.

Holiday Weekend Warrior!
Rebekah Lang took advantage of the past weekend's extra day of revelry to play some new(ish) games like LittleBigPlanet 3. I, on the other hand, was drinking copious amounts of coffee at a cabin on a lake, catching fish with a child's bug net and bread, wondering how my buddies were getting along in Diablo 3 without my crusader's help. Well played, Lang. Well played.

Opinion – Let's Plays Are Stupid. Here's Why.
Urdnot Shepard thinks watching videos of people playing video games while they speak into a mic isn't very fun. After trying to watch the most popular ones on YouTube, I have to agree; I just don't get it. Maybe it's because I have a finite amount of time these days between my full-time job and freelance work. As a kid I could watch my friends play an entire JRPG and enjoy it.

Here's Why Let's Play Isn't A Waste Of Time...
Marco Polo gives a differing viewpoint on the Let's Play videos. Maybe he's right; perhaps watching TV is just as big a waste of time (some TV is for sure). It's a matter of opinion, and honestly it all comes down to one thing: Whatever makes you happy.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition – A Remake of Epic Proportions
Raging Searchers is a huge fan of the Gears of War series. So am I. Part review and part walk down memory lane, this blog post explains the appeal of Gears of War (hint: The gameplay holds up insanely well years later), and why the nicely priced remake should be enjoyed by old fans and newcomers. I miss you, Dom.

52/52 Week 36 – Arguing With Myself – Rayman Legends
TheDarkestLink, Prince of Smash, writes about whether Rayman Legends or Origins is the superior game. My money is on Origins, but it's a fun read on the merits and shortcomings of each game. I'd just like more Rayman, to be honest.

Community Reviews:

Dragon's Dogma Online Review: You are the True Pawn
Shrink is a huge fan of Dragon's Dogma – and for good reason. The series is fantastic. So, when it was announced that Japan was receiving an online version, our blogger was excited...but then disappointed. Unfortunately, the online version of the series doesn't hold up as well. That's too bad, but maybe there's time to fix it.

Final Verdict – Final Fantasy: Type-0 HD
Jon_G isn't sure if Type-0 HD was a good game. He writes about how there were fun moments in the game. Other times it felt like work to complete it. I've felt this way with some games – but not with the great ones. What do the rest of you think of the game?

Grow Home (PS4) Review: My Kind of Zen Garden
Enuo says Grow Home is "every bit as fun" as he hoped. Chosen over two other titles as one of this month's free PlayStation Plus games, Grow Home is given a perfect score. I'll have to move this up my to-play list.

Writing Challenge Responses:

Community Writing Challenge: Are Video Game Releases Well Dated?
GerardoExber gives us his take on game release dates and raises some interesting questions. Give it a read, mull it over, and then tell us what you think about the way games are released. I would like to see more games released over the summer, but then again, I'm still behind on PlayStation and Nintendo 64 titles. So maybe no games should be release for a year or so.

Community Writing Challenge:

Imagine your life was a video game. Now that you've thought about the horror, awesomeness, or oddness of it all, what would that game look like? This is meant to be a fun challenge with you, dear writers, blogging about what kind of game your life would be. Get creative! My life game would be a cat-petting simulator. Sometimes it's a puzzle game where I have to align my arms just perfectly so that my cat, Miyamoto, can get comfy without my arms falling asleep. When I'm away from the cat, it's more like FIFA. That's...about it.

Community Playdate:

I miss playing Rocket League. So please join me again this Sunday on PS4 at 7 p.m. CT. Add me, Louis Kensei, and please let me know if you'll make it. If you're all done playing Rocket League, please let me know in the comments which games you'd like us to play and we'll make it happen. I'll be playing the new FIFA game when it's released, so if anyone would like to join, let me know.

I hope you enjoy the blogs! Please contact me via my Game Informer page or on Twitter at @LouisGarcia12 with any blog news or playdate suggestions.
