The Five Worst Games Of 2014

by Joe Juba on Dec 30, 2014 at 06:12 AM

Everyone wants to talk about the best the year had to offer, but maybe that's just a coping mechanism. Maybe all the positivity is just an attempt to forget the fact that we also spent hours playing some complete garbage, too.

Like last year, we collected some videos and review excerpts from the most unbearable, broken, and unplayable games that crossed our desks. The games below are the worst ones we reviewed in 2014 – all scoring a 4 or lower. If you're looking for the bottom of the barrel, look no further.

If you're after the good stuff instead (including our pick for Game of the Year), we'll be revealing them in early January!

Rambo: The Video Game

Score: 4 (review)
"If you want to watch John Rambo mow through waves of baddies in violent and satisfying fashion, watch the final half hour of the 2008 film. Don’t spend your money and time to recreate any moments in this cheap, broken wreck." — Dan Ryckert

Escape Dead Island

Score: 2 (review)
"Escape Dead Island stars one of the least likeable protagonists in all of video games, and not in the cool anti-hero way. Cliff kicks off his quest by proudly stealing his friend's school notes, listening to her private audio journal, and uttering the phrase "the *** abides." Cliff sucks, and you're stuck with him as he tries to work through his daddy issues by getting the scoop on the zombie-infested island of Narapela." — Tim Turi

R.B.I. Baseball 14

Score: 2 (review)
"R.B.I. Baseball 14 is one of the most baffling new releases I’ve come across. The visuals are somewhat modern, and the rosters are current, but everything that happens after the pitch is thrown harks back to the ‘80s – a time when developers were just starting to figure out how to make baseball games." — Andrew Reiner

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

Score: 4 (review)
"No matter how fast he sprints, Sonic just can't seem to outrun the curse that follows him from game to game. Big Red Button's Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric game ties-in with the new Cartoon Network show, but this new entry still suffers from problems that have plagued the series for years. Even worse, it layers on a new level of sloppy combat for Sonic and his friends." — Tim Turi

Rekoil

Score: 2 (review)
"If you want a multiplayer-only shooter without spending $60, there are plenty of options for cheap or completely free. Normally, this is the part of the review where I’d reiterate that you should not play Rekoil under any circumstance, but from the abundance of deserted maps I saw, it seems that most gamers have already received that memo." — Dan Ryckert
