The lights are on
Hello, my name is Mike, and I don't really enjoy Grand Theft Auto. I've tried. I promise that I've tried. I played all the way through GTA III. Sure, I had to use cheat codes because of the checkpoint problems, but I saw the end.
I played through about half of Vice City, but after I realized that the wobbly cars and weird targeting of the clumsy on-foot combat weren't getting better, I stopped. I even owned a copy of San Andreas at launch and never unwrapped it because I just wasn't interested.
I buckled and bought a copy of GTA IV at launch and put in about five hours before getting bored. The funny thing is that I understand the appeal. The tongue-in-cheek, wry approach to society is engaging. The stories are filled with memorable characters.
The radio stations, especially with Lazlo at the helm, are some of the best aural experiences in gaming. I understand all of that, and still there is something about the franchise that feels off to me. I just don't have fun playing these games. And if I'm not having fun, then there's no reason to keep playing.
I write this not to diminish the enjoyment that so many derive from the series (and there are millions of you, making GTA the cornerstone of Take-Two's business). I don't deny its mass appeal. I just want others like me to know that it's OK to be different.
So, while your friends migrate to Los Santos next week and you feel left out because you don't want to spend $60 just to fit in, remember that you aren't alone. It's OK to not like Grand Theft Auto.

You know. I'd bash. Yet I have to agree. GTA3 was rough but it was the first of the series to go 3D and open world together. Vice City was not smooth but it was better over GTA3. GTA:SA was by far my favorite as it was a perfect balance of massive open world, no loading screens, and characters could like. GTAIV I did get after breaking down myself. I enjoyed it but really it was the time I finally discovered Saints Row. Sadly GTAIV sucked comparing to the other GTA titles. So GTAV has some high hopes but also reasonable ones. Yet from what is seen. All of them have been meant. At least to me. I enjoy GTA as I love sandbox open world games. I hate a game that tells me to go this way and that way. It is not fun. Maybe why I enjoy some RPG/JRPGs more than others do to how open a world is to explore....-shrugs-...Still can't hate on people who don't like GTA. As it is not for everyone.
its true, but unless you've try the new upcoming GTA V.
I really loved vice city, then liked san andreas (much better combat) and then GTA 4 was kinda meh. I'm not getting 5 because, simply put, there are way funner open world games out now. Causing meyhem in infamous is way funner than a tank (which they got rid of in 4...) ever was in vice city and same saint's row as well. I never had that much fun in the GTA campaign and everyone else does messing around so much better.
Simply put, the genre has left GTA in the dust
You will all be in my thoughts as I rob banks and fly jets through a city on Tuesday.
Mike, thank you. I too am Mike actually. I cannot get into GTA no matter what I do. I saw my friends playing the originals back when I was 12-17 and then after IV blew up, I tried again. I cannot understand how I can love everything Rockstar does but this. I eat up their games over and over but whenever I try GTA IV I cringe. I should like it for so many reasons but I don't. I want to try V thinking this is the biggest and best yet and surely it will work. Yet every trailer or screenshot or article just makes me shake my head like a weary old man on his porch. What the hell is wrong with me? I thank you for your confession. There needs to be a support group. I'll bring lemon squares.
I don't dislike it, but I don't care anymore. If I had it I would play it and probably finish and enjoy it. But with so many games on my belt (Thanks STEAM!) I just don't really care.
GTA is impossible to not like. Just force yourself to like it and we'll get along just fine. lol
I've never played it, so I can't say that I DON'T like it. But why start now? Sure I could be missing out, but I'm trying to keep my gaming time down to a minimum until Dark Souls II comes out.
Its ok buddy. Lot's of games surprised me, like this one. It's your opinion. And i don't like sport games either. I prefer them in real life.
I see your points. I'm a sucker for open world games and not many do it better than rockstar IMO. can't wait for Tuesday.
I've never played GTA and I probably never will, it just doesn't appeal to me!
Same here, Mike. I just couldn't get into the GTA games. Nothing against those who have, I just don't have fun with them, which is what gaming is all about.
its the people who act like butt holes when you tell them you don't like a popular game series.
GTA, like Wal-Mart, is only good for one thing: people watching.
