Recently, there has been no shortage of developers severely misjudging what the average gamer is looking for in a collector's edition. Not that we're pointing any fingers, Codemasters. We decided to round up a few that might be worth a second glance.
Read on to see the most fun, bizarre, and value-packed collector's edition to keep an eye out for.
Splinter Cell Blacklist Paladin Aircraft Edition
Cost: $169.99
Release Date: August 20, 2013
Includes:
- Remote-controlled version of Sam Fisher's Paladin airplane
- Splinter Cell Echoes graphic novel
- Billionaire's Yacht co-op level
- Limited edition poster featuring Sam Fisher
- Upper Echelon DLC Pack
Forget the poster and other useless junk. An airplane!? Sure, you don't really need one. But if Ubisoft is going to throw it in the collector's edition, you might as well take off work a day or two to give it a try. Seems reasonable.
Grand Theft Auto V Special Edition
Cost: $79.99
Release Date: September 17, 2013
Includes:
- Steelbook with exclusive artwork
- Blueprint map of Los Santos and Blaine County
- Extra DLC content including power-ups, weapons, trials, and outfits
For $20 more, the extra DLC is worth it for longtime GTA fans. In particular, the stunt plane trials can add even more replay value to a massive open-world game.
It may be worth noting that there is a more expensive edition of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto V coming out. That edition will be $149.99 and will also include a security deposit bag and a hat. Considering that those are the major differences, you may want to save your $70. Unless you've just really had your eye on a new security deposit bag.
Saint's Row IV Game of the Generation Edition
Cost: $129.99
Release Date: August 20, 2013
Includes:
- Light-up display case
- Johnny Gat figurine
- Velvet carrying pouch
- Dubstep gun replica
- Dubstep Doomsday button
If the sheer ridiculousness of a light-up display case for a single game doesn't have you sold, how does the prospect of having dubstep on hand for emergencies at the push of a button?
Watch Dog's Limited Edition
Cost: $129.99
Release Date: November 19, 2013
Includes:
- Steel book game case
- Aiden Pearce figurine
- Replica face mask
- Hardbound art book
- Official soundtrack
Standard edition of Watch Dogs: $59.99.
Collector's edition of Watch Dogs: $129.99
Dishing out justice in the exclusive vigilante mask: Priceless.
While the $129.99 is pretty steep, you get a decent amount of stuff for the money. This set is likely left to the hardcore collectors.
Tales of Xillia Limited Edition
Cost: $59.99
Release Date: August 6, 2013
Includes:
- Character profile booklet
- Tale of Xillia music selection CD
- Two DLC costumes
While we have already covered the collector's edition of Tales of Xillia, the limited edition is a much more budget friendly option. For the regular 60 buck price tag, you can get a soundtrack and other goodies just for getting the first edition of the game. Not a bad deal. If you just gotta have a figurine of the lovely Milla Maxwell though, kiss an extra $40 goodbye.
As a college student generally too broke to buy collector's editions, I probably won't be purchasing any of these other than the Tales of Xillia LE. But that doesn't mean our readers should be deprived of getting a quick roundup of upcoming limited edition offerings.
