CosBlog # 85: Mini Chief by Randall Ng

by Meagan Marie on May 31, 2013 at 09:50 AM

I’ve got a massive soft spot for pint-sized cosplay, meaning Mini Chief wreaked havoc on my heart. Created by Randall Ng for his son, Paxton compensates for his short stature with boatloads of style and a juice box or two. I can’t wait to see what this father/son duo comes up with next!

Who: The Character
Paxton is dressed up as Master Chief from Halo 4: Sierra-117. We have officially named this costume "the Mini Chief."

Why: The Decision
I have always been a fan of the Halo series, and the new Halo 4 armor was just so awesome. I made this costume for my son, as he also enjoys Halo and cool looking costumes.

What: The Process
The costume from planning through construction took about two months to complete with modifications during each iteration for durability, detailing, and fitting. Most of the costume is made of 6mm craft foam and assembled with lots and lots of super glue. I used normal acrylic paint for colors. It's extremely lightweight and fairly durable. The helmet was the most difficult part of the costume, as I had to consider ventilation points and visibility while retaining the look of the character.

Where and When: The Debut
The Mini Chief debuted when I brought him to work. A photo taken of him on August 21, 2012 went viral with various sites labeling it, "Haters Gonna Hate."

Links: The Cosplayer
"The Mini Chief" has his own Facebook page called, "The Big Adventures of the Mini Chief," which was originally made just for friends and coworkers but then it was discovered by some other sites and has a modest following now. My website is www.randallng.com where I have a small section for costumes I've made for him in the past.
