The lights are on
Last night, Nintendo surprised fans and pundits with a startling announcement. At June's Electronic Entertainment Expo, there will be no grand display on the stage of the Nokia Theatre. The live orchestra will not be returning, and Shigeru Miyamoto will not magically pull a Pikmin from his pocket in front of hundreds of onlookers.
Nintendo is trading up the pomp and circumstance of a stage presentation with opportunities both intimate and focused. Make no mistake. Nintendo is saving a lot of money by eschewing the traditional E3 keynote format for smaller, more targeted events.
The news that the company is drastically shifting its approach to North America's largest video game trade show came just hours after further financial troubles were revealed. It's hard to believe that the significant shortfall in operating income (even when considering the modest net surplus) didn't have something to do with this decision. But peel the numbers back and you'll find the reason that spending on the grandeur of a keynote are exactly what Nintendo should be doing.
Sales missed expectations. Furthermore, it's troubling that there is no qualification to my previous statement. The 3DS is a success, but Nintendo has failed to reach its 15 million unit target. The Wii U is drastically underperforming, missing even the reduced expectation of five million units sold globally by more than one million.
Nintendo cites poor communication and a failure to reach the non-traditional video game consumers that bought the Wii. The same families that waited in lines and called every retailer desperate for a Wii for nearly a year are the same ones that have no idea what the Wii U offers them.
These are the people who don't read Game Informer or other video game publications. These are the families that have never heard of Nintendo Direct. These are the parents and grandparents that hear about video games from traditional, mainstream news sources; the same outlets that normally help fill the seats in the Nokia Theatre.
The Nintendo Direct presentations that complemented the E3 2012 keynote and floor presentations were fantastic for fans. They provided a depth of information that diehards craved. This year's Nintendo Direct shows will not reach the average Wii owner. They will not be useful in increasing the limping sales numbers. They will not replace the expensive stage presentation.
Nintendo will no doubt have its least expensive E3 in years. The company is correct to recognize that Microsoft and Sony are going to attract a lot of attention with new hardware. Right now though, Nintendo needs to stand tall, show off an enormous, buzz-creating lineup of first-party software, and hook people who have been sitting on the fence since November. A surprise announcement from third-party publishers offering renewed support would be enormously beneficial, but based on statements from EA and Deep Silver (to name a few), that isn't likely.
It's not too late for Nintendo to incorporate tactics that bring in new consumers. If the strategy is exclusively focused on the base, though, the savings recaptured from this strategy shift won't be enough to create the momentum company president Satoru Iwata needs to reach his goal of 100 billion yen operating income.

I guess this is just one of those points where a company reached their peak and is then on the decline. Yes Nintendo has some amazing series in their catalog, but have you walked into a store that sells games and looked at their selection? I only recognize about a fourth of the games and the rest are wasted space and cheap dumb downed series slag. I wanted to buy a Wii U at launch, but then I saw that their line up was amazingly sad for a system launch. Similar to when the 3DS came out. But that has changed since, but what was stopping them from delaying the system launch to help bolster the starting catalog? Rehashes/re-releases of games a year or 2 old is kind of cop out. If anything leasing even 1 of their mainstays to a competitor would allow them to test the water so to speak. Sega did it, they are not one of the Titans of gaming as before, but they are still running and developing without the pressures of having to put out consoles every few years.
Its like a lot of you don't know how to read, the article states that YES E3 is for the Hardcore, but it is also for the general press to generate buzz for casual gamers half if not more of the core audience the original Wii attracted. Casuals aren't watching E3 any more than they are watching Nintendo direct, but they do watch all local news which gets new packages from their mother nnetworks who cover E3 and the 24 hour networks defenitly cover things if only for a moment but it all sets up the holiday rush. No E3 no buzz beyond their core audience who already likely own the dang thing.

I think E3 is a venue specifically for gamers, so they aren't really missing out on finding new customers. Seems they're looking for the people who bought the Wii outside of the typical gamer spectrum and trying to push them to adopt the Wii U.
i really don't want to buy a wiiU out of pity but if they are struggling that bad i guise i could buy a wiiU for my niece or brother :/ . i mean i love nintendo but the wiiU doesn't interest me at all ,got the 3Ds and its the best thing iv'e bout all year
I don't think mainstream media really pays that much attention to E3. Maybe it is a miss, but I think they should spend the money on more traditional advertising. I just showed my buddy Wii U last night and he had never heard of it. But of course he flipped out playing NSMB U. All they need to do is get this thing in people's hands and show them how great of a console it is.
the best thing Nintendo can do is to buy some comercial space on Fox or another network, and do some similar comercials that they did for the Wii, sure the the two japneese guys going to houses saying "we would like to play" was anooying, but it was catchey, and I still find myself quoting it to my brother when I want to play videogames or board games with him.
If Nintendo's having trouble getting the WiiU to take off now, what's gonna happen when the 720/PS4 come out? : O
I'm worried...a healthy Nintendo is only good for the video game industry. Reduction of competition is reduction in quality and increase in prices, just to start. They've got to figure out what they want their niche to be; their inability to stick with a single theme has been a huge problem across hardware generations.
Perhaps the Big N will finally ride into the light on the hardware front and become the amazing third-party publisher they should be. That still makes handhelds, of course.
Who's gonna have software to show off at E3? oh thats right, Ninty is. Have fun with your call of duty demo on nextbox/ps4.
I think people have it wrong about what the traditional/non-traditional gaming community thinks about the Wii U.
The problem is that the non-traditional gaming community just doesn't care because they still have a Wii and just, simply put, aren't interested in the Wii U or any other console because they will be kept satisfied with what they already have.
As far as the traditional gaming community goes, they haven't marketed toward them and until they do they won't care or be anymore interested in it than the non-traditional community because it is another Wii and they don't understand how nice of a console it actually is and how much better it actually is than the Wii.
I really don't like this. Come on Nintendo this is E3!!!!! Bring out the big guns show us a new zelda hell show us game and wario. I know that switching things up may help Nintendo in the long run because its going to be really hard for them to get the hardcore crowd with the new xbox and ps4 lurking in the wild. Not having a big E3 showing seems blasphemous to me.
While I'm not happy about this news when I first heard this, I have to ask the question "why is this as big of a deal as it is"?
Does Nintendo need a big press conference to show new games? Think about it. Do we want to sit and watch Nintendo say how great the Wii U and 3DS is and why we need to get one or both? Do we need the cheesy way that Nintendo introduces their games? No. The thing that Nintendo needs is games. Be it Gameinformer and/or other sites you go to get your E3 news, we just want to know what games we want to buy. Not how all the extra things that are for investors. With these demos, they can show what they have coming up and give reporters a chance (if the games are good) to promote them quicly. Why this is may not be what most of us used, this could be something that Nintendo could do right. Hopefully
