The Goals And Inspirations For Thief

When rebooting a franchise, the developers can't help but look outside the original games for inspiration. While the team at Eidos Montreal is confident that they understand why the older Thief games are held in such high regard and are bringing those elements to the new game, the long production cycle for this game has given them plenty of time to comb through other media. From excellent stealth games like Mark of the Ninja to atmospheric titles like The Room on iOS, the team cited a wide range of influences.

Watch the video below to hear Thief's director Nicolas Cantin and producer Stephane Roy explain who the new game is for and how games like Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, and Dishonored have helped shape it along the way.

  • yay for stealth games!
  • You think the developer would wait for maybe a year before releasing an exact copy of Dishonored. ;D
  • This game is not for the average 30 year old taffers, this is for the new generation. Thief is taking inspiration from assassins creed and mark of the ninja! And Dishonored? What's this, reverse inspiration? I wish the world had ended in 2012.
  • Cool.  Can't wait to see more about Thief.  I loved playing this game back in '97.

  • If they take the many good pieces from the mentioned games, it should be an awesome product once it's done. I'm a fan of the Thief series and hope this one will turn out well.

  • I bet it'll be waaay better than Dishonored.
  • Yeah..this didn't really make me feel more hopeful about the game.
  • I hear their accents and I can't help but think they're more influenced by The Room by Tommy Wiseau.
  • I'm beginning to understand that these videos give us zero new information about the game, how it works, what it looks like, or how it plays. These are just hype videos, and they don't even do a good job of that. I'm getting more and more disenchanted with how GI covers games after a reveal.
  • Do not put QTE in this game!

  • Clicks because of Thief. Sees Assassin's Creed. Cries and leaves.
  • I want this game so bad

  • I took a hard hit when i saw, what they did to the Hitman Series with "Absolution". I dont know how i will react, if Thief will be as far from the originals as i think it will be. Please dont screw it ! Noone needs Focus or AC in a Thief Game !!!
  • How about three things they SHOULDN'T take from other games:

    1. Third person (I don't care if it's only for a few seconds. This is a Thief game and I expect to be able to play exclusively in first person mode the entire time)

    2. Excessive hand-holding (the game should be hardcore and immersive. I don't want things flashing on the screen telling me where to go or how to attack)

    3. Cinematics interrupting regular gameplay

  • Mod
Pumped for this. Really nice to see this series come back and we need more stealth games. Already want the "it's a clone of Dishonored" to stop though.
  • Sounding good.

  • Will this game be accessible to the casual gaming crowd? Will we get some kind of special vision where we can see all enemies through walls and are color coded? Because I don't want to play a game that is too overly complicated. I don't even like stealth games, can you just make it so I can kill everyone instead?
  • Hmmm, these comments are so pessimistic.
  • This game is currently my number one most anticipated (effin' love stealth), but I fear that it will be swamped by a bunch of tools saying that it's a Dishonored rip-off, despite being a nearly 15 year old franchise. Dishonored was utterly fantastic, but Thief really needs to separate itself from Arkane's title.
