Question Of The Month Reader Responses: Issue #240

by Jeff Marchiafava on Mar 08, 2013 at 07:43 AM

In issue 238, we asked readers what next-gen system they plan on buying and why. The newly announced PS4 beat out Microsoft's next Xbox by a slim margin, but more than a few readers are taking a wait-and-see approach. Here's a sampling of the responses we received.

PlayStation 4 The Win:

  • I am looking forward to the next PlayStation because after going through five Xbox consoles and their rings of death, I trust Sony more than Microsoft.

    Michael Van Beek
  • I plan on buying the PS4 because I believe Sony creates better systems and has better exclusive games. Plus, if Sony continues to offer online services for free, why wouldn't I get the PS4?

    Tommy White
  • PS4 no doubt. I have and love all consoles, but Sony is always so innovative. Their exclusive titles are amazing, and I have my fingers crossed for Resistance, Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, or Killzone launch titles. Between now and then, I will be allocating money from each paycheck until launch.

    Josh Dyson
  • I plan on buying the PS4, mostly because of the rumors of it supporting 4K resolution. It’s a nice reason to get a new TV.

    Noah Ervin
  • I have been a Sony fan for quite some time and so far the only Playstation system I  haven’t owned was the PS3. The only reason why I haven’t purchased one is because of my financial situation, and fortunately for me it has just improved. So, with that being said, I have come to terms that if I have waited this long I can wait a little longer for the PS4, and hope to God that it has backwards compatibility to support both PS2 and  PS3 titles. I mainly just want the option to download PS2 titles. That would be a dream come true.

  • I'm a big-time game fan who doesn't really buy into the notion of brand loyalty. I've owned pretty much every game console that's been released thus far and at some point I hope to own all of the upcoming hardware.

Having said that, I'm probably going with Sony's next offering first. Sony's hardware intrigues me most; I'm expecting great things from cross-play with the PS Vita – I'm hopeful they'll release a bundle that includes both the PS4 and the Vita at one low cost – and I think Sony has big plans for the streaming media side of things. Cost of Internet accessibility is another issue; if the trend continues and Sony once again offers PSN usage at no cost to the consumer, then it will easily be my first pick for next-gen hardware

Next Box Is An Xbox:

  • I would get the new Xbox. Nintendo has disappointed me lately, I am not a big fan of Sony, and I love my the Xbox 360. When Microsoft's new Xbox comes out, I want it. I read some rumors about it and if they're true, I will go nuts.

    Josh Edinger
  • I plan on eventually buying both next-gen consoles so that I can experience the great exclusives both have to offer, but as much as I love PlayStation, I'll be going with Xbox at launch. I am a huge fan of multiplayer shooters and have spent eight years building up my friends and online persona on Xbox, so lining up Battlefield 4, the next Call of Duty, and Bungie's project Destiny with the next iteration of Xbox Live makes too much sense.

    Spencer Fletcher
  • I most likely am going to get the next-gen Microsoft console. I used to be a huge Sony person; when the PlayStation 2 came out, I was sucked right in. I had lots of games for the console, and still do. When I finally was introduced to the Xbox 360, however, I completely changed my course. After the PlayStation 3 was released, I gave it a try and was gravely disappointed with the lack of good games and the overall system performance. I do still love the God of War series as well as Kingdom Hearts, but my loyalty is for Microsoft as of now.

    Joseph Roles
  • I am most likely going to buy the Xbox 720 for my next-gen console. I've played on Xbox consoles all my life, and I don't plan on changing.

    Sammy Rider
  • I plan to buy the rumored next-gen Xbox console to carry over my gamerscore points on my Xbox Live account. I just hope this time Microsoft doesn't get outdone by Sony with the whole DVD vs. Blu-ray player. A lot of my friends thought the Xbox 360 was instantly outdated and outclassed because of Sony's Blu-ray disc drive. So I want to be assured before buying that something similar will not happen again. Also the processor, graphics card, and hard drive should not be outdone either. Microsoft should also fix its own issues with license transfer of movies, songs, and other content downloads to be friendlier between devices. Right now there is little to no incentive to buy those types of content on a Microsoft device. Apple is leagues ahead of this and Microsoft needs to catch up.

The PC Solution:

  • I plan on buying a PC, because I like having customizable software and hardware. I also like to mod and use a trackball.

    Garrett Blackwood
  • I'm primarily an Xbox player, shifting over to my PS3 for Sony's exclusives. My concern is not for the console technology itself, but for the continuing rumors that both Microsoft and Sony might block pre-owned games from playing without additional activation costs and hurdles. Ninety percent of my game purchases are pre-owned to save both money and to screen out the good-in-theory-but-poorly-executed games (Homefront, etc.). If either or both next-gen consoles go that route, I will not purchase either, period. I'll go back to PC gaming.

    George Atkinson

The Waiting Game:

  • I will eventually get both consoles, but will give it a year. One thing about new consoles is the games tend to be rushed at the beginning.

    C Valencia
  • As of right now, I don't plan on buying any of them. I am currently enjoying my Xbox 360 and the wealth of games it currently offers. Much further down the road, after the consoles have been out a year or two, I might consider buying one.
