Super Replay: Luigi's Mansion – Episode 7

Game Informer's Replay crew has played a ton of crappy games. First there was Overblood, then Galerians, then Overblood 2, then Cyberia, and we just finished up Blue Stinger. While these games are unforgivably awful, I wouldn't trade my time with them for anything. From the statue falling on Raz Karcy in the first hours of Overblood to Dogs Bower's jean shorts, we've shared a lot of good memories with the Replay community. However, I've been jumping on the proverbial grenade by playing all of these stinkers to completion. To reward my gaming martyrdom, the rest of the crew let me choose a game I thought might actually be fun to play. What a novel idea. I chose Luigi's Mansion.

The fact that this Super Replay lines up with the 3DS sequel, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (out March 24), is just a happy coincidence. I missed out on the first game when I got a GameCube, instead focusing on Super Smash Bros. Melee and Rogue Squadron II: Red Leader. In the following years I learned I missed out on some quirky, ghost-busting fun. Recent hands-on time with the 3DS sequel further solidified the fact that I needed to play this game. So here were are, huddled around a purple Nintendo console, ready to beat the sucker.

Join Dan Ryckert, Jeff Cork, Andrew Reiner, and me as we don the green cap of Mario's brother to celebrate Nintendo's official Year of Luigi with Luigi's Mansion.

  • OH. MY. GOD. YES! Thank you GI! This is going to be amazing!
  • LUIGI'S MANSION! YES! I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!
  • This is actually going to be the first time I'll see the game in action. Well, other than that one Replay. ^_^
Also, Dan, why the hell are you so stupid? Reiner may as well just put a 13 year-old in the room to laugh at the same joke for as long as he does. -_-
  • Not what I would have expected, kudos. It's about time they let you have fun for going through all those horrible games.
  • Ooooh boy. This is gonna be a good one, I can tell already. :D

  • Awesome fourth guy Thank you Tim for Playing and not DAN

  • Not the highlight of the Gamecubes games but it had potential
  • well this is awesome very sneaky GI

  • OH MAN! Couldn't have made a better choice. One of my favorite games :D

And one not nearly enough people played.

Edit: I bet Tim's gonna have a real rough time with the Boos. He's pretty good for a first timer, though. Better than I was anyway. I think it was the first dual analog game I'd played.
  • Amazing! I love this game! But this one will be pretty short.

Edit: Well this one would be pretty short, but I get the feeling I'm going to see more humping of objects than actual productive gameplay.
  • Yay!  I missed out on this game as well, and I'm kinda curious about the 3DS sequel, so this works out quite nicely for me.

  • HOORAY! New Super Replay! Although, it's Luigi's Mansion, so while it'll be awesome, it'll also be done in, like, four episodes. But it really is cool, and it still looks great to boot!

I certainly hope Next Level's upcoming sequel is longer...

Anyway, now to Youtube! Does the "fullscreen" button not work for anyone else on this site, by the way? I appreciate embedding the Youtube videos whenever the GI staff does it, but I like to watch Super Replays in fullscreen and, dangit, it NEVER does it here. Gotta head to Youtube to get that functionality...
  • What the hell? A surprise Super Replay? And it's Luigi's Mansion? This is awesome! And well deserved for Tim, too.

Oh, and I thought I'd point out that its Rogue Leader, not Red Leader. Also, Melee came out on the GameCube. Brawl was on Wii.

  • YES this was one of my first gamecube games, great memories playing it, especially during stormy weather at night

  • oh gell yeah! such a good game

  • This is one of the most nostalgic games for me. I can't wait to see this.

  • For whatever reason, I never considered he might pick this game. This will be fun - I know what I'll be doing tomorrow morning. Underrated game, imho.
  • I'm glad they made a Replay of this, now I have an idea of what the 3DS version will be like, EPIC!
  • I never watched the Mega Man Legends 2 or Blue Stinger Super Replays for some reason, but this is a Super Replay I will NOT miss! :D
  • I like how this is still vaguely survival horror; nice to stay on theme, Tim!

If you need to check out more GOOD survival horror/adventure games, to break up the awful (but interesting and entertaining) ones, I suggest Clock Tower 3 for PS2, TRAPT for PS2, Haunting Ground for PS2, Extermination for PS2, Fear Effect for PSX, Parasite Eve for PSX, Eternal Darkness for Gamecube, or Geist for Gamecube. Oh and The Suffering too, for PS2. Those are all much better than the usual Super Replay fodder.

That being said, I much prefer the "bad" ones:) But your mental health is important, Tim! Luigi's Mansion should help a lot!

I hope you guys someday play RTX Red Rock. Have no idea about the quality of the game, it just looks stupid and got mediocre scores back in the day. But that main guy... he reminds me of Raz Karcy...
