What Sony Can Learn From PS3's Launch

With the PlayStation 4 on the horizon, it’s easy to be reminded of previous console launches. PlayStation 3 launched on November 11, 2006, and while it wasn’t a train-wreck, it certainly had its issues. When excited gamers bring their PlayStation 4 consoles home for the first time, we hope for their sake that Sony has learned from their mistakes from last generation. Here’s how we hope it goes down:

Don’t make the price stupid

One of the most memorable quotables from E3 in 2006 came from Kaz Hirai during Sony’s press conference. After Sony fans watched a rough press conference that included Eye of Judgment demos and the infamous “giant enemy crab” moment, it was time to get down to brass tacks. Gamers wanted to know how much lighter their wallet would be that November, and they were shocked when Hirai said “Five hundred and ninety-nine US dollars.” With most console launches historically landing in the $199-299 range, the announcement felt like a punch to the gut. Sony shouldn’t turn gamers against the PlayStation 4 launch, and the best way to do this is with a reasonable price point.

Make the launch lineup feel next-gen

Many console launches feature a small number of must-have, exclusive experiences and a bigger collection of ports from already-available systems. PlayStation 3’s launch lineup was rough, with only one title feeling significantly new and next-gen (Resistance). Outside of that, it featured a ton of sports games, ports, and ho-hum exclusives (Genji: Days of the Blade, Ridge Racer 7, Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire). If Sony can confirm several exclusive AAA titles for launch, it would go a long way towards getting PlayStation fans excited.

Put a headset in the box

Sony liked to tout PlayStation 3’s bluetooth capabilities, which allowed for a variety of headsets and accessories to communicate with the system. While impressive, this didn’t make up for the omission of a communication device in the box at launch. PS3’s online experience suffered for years, as multiplayer matches were virtually silent while Xbox 360 owners chatted away on their included headsets (which was either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the situation). We don’t need an expensive, top shelf set of headphones in the box. We just need something we can use to talk to our friends.

Don’t shoehorn in gimmicks

Nintendo created a buzz with its motion-based Wii controller, and Sony felt like they had to jump on the bandwagon in some fashion. Their response was the Sixaxis, the PS3’s launch controller that featured basic motion capabilities. It sucked. Some games tried to utilize it, but it was almost uniformly terrible to use. Balancing on logs in Uncharted wasn’t fun, controlling the dragon in Lair was awful, and changing the flight path of arrows in Heavenly Sword could have just as easily been replicated with the analog stick. To date, the only fun I’ve ever had with Sixaxis motion involved making Sackboy do pelvic thrusts. Gamers tend to dislike gimmicks, so Sony needs to focus more on hardware and games. Maybe have a quick mention of Move support at the press conference, but it would be in their best interest to avoid making it (or anything like it) a focal point.

Pick your SKUs and stick with them

PlayStation 3 launched with two SKUs, one for $599 and one for $499. This was easy enough to wrap your head around, but Sony didn’t take long to introduce a wide variety of different versions of the console. As time went on, it became harder and harder to keep track of which features each one had. Which ones are backward compatible? Wasn’t there one that didn’t have wi-fi? These are annoying questions for gamers to have to ask, much less for parents or significant others that are buying a console as a gift. An extra SKU may be necessary (even welcome), but Sony should keep things relatively limited for a while.

  • Agreed. The price and launch games are big ones for me. Watch Dogs!!! :D
  • I always chuckle when I see that pic of a 60 GB PS3 costing 599$, now that today I could get a 320GB PS3 for 300$, more or less.
  • Hopefully the price will be not much more then $400 max. They need to have a strong launch to start off.

  • just no YELLOW light of death again.....it killed me last time
  • Don't show pre-rendered footage and then try and pass it off as real gameplay.
  • Agreed with all of them. I really do hope they include a headset, online play feels lonely sometimes. Feels awkward when only me or some other person has a mic.
  • And I STILL paid $600 for an 80GB PS3 with backwards compatibility and MGS4. No regrets.
  • Mod
Some might scoff, but I'd be willing to put $450 down for the top of the line model...but I guess it's really too early to say seeing as how we don't know the official specs just yet.
  • How about a console release where supply at least somewhat meets demand. I'm already trying to figure out how I'm supposed to preorder the PS4 in the 24 hour window before everyone that preoders consoles is sold out.

Calling around town for the month of November to see which lucky store got 1 or 2 consoles isn't a great deal of fun.
  • Um, Dan, I liked Sixaxis controller. I enjoyed using it in Heavenly Sword -- it was actually more precise and natural than the sticks. And what about Flower and Heavy Rain, and likewise games that actually -did- utilize the controller's features. I'm not saying it was always used great, but it's not like half of the gimmick Wii games that were produced.
  • I'm curious if Sony thinks they can launch a console at $500-600? Honestly, if that's going to be the price, I'd rather spend an extra $200 for a solid gaming PC.
  • Sony could get some integrity...
  • My only gripes with the PS3 was the Price and when they wouldn't swipe up exclusive DLC like Microsoft did. (The price was worth it IMO, but It kind of made me broke for several months since I saved up for it lol) I guess I could go either way on the headset thing, it's nice to have when I play with friends but I'm not very "talkative" so I don't use it when I'm playing with people I don't really know lol
  • I predict Steam Client for the PS4. That would *** destroy the evil Microsoft once and for all.
  • I may be in the minority in this aspect, but I wouldn't mind spending $500(or more) on next gen as long as it backs it with solid hardware.
  • I have a feeling all next gen consoles are going to be 500$ minimum. Games are the big one for me, I don't want to be one month in beatinall the games available and switching back to my ps3 until more release.
  • If the "PS4" has already been built, then this article has come too late. They would have to redesign the "PS4" for these expectations, assuming they haven't followed them already.
  • I didn't even get a PS3 because it was too expensive for games that I wasn't interested in, or were releasing on multiple consoles. PS4 needs a solid line up of games and I would definitely like a headset(xbox live is another big reason I went with the 360 over the PS4), I like communicating with my teamates online.
  • Then they wonder why they got cream this generation. Start is super important, they basically had to play catch up or try to copy the other system gimmicks, Microsoft had a pay mempership with extras like achievements, he comes Sony with plus and trophies, Wii has motion sensor, here comes Sony with the **** looking wand, Microsoft gets a useable online content like Netflix and lord behold sir copy s a lot comes fumbleing back in with their easilybreech system security. Not even there best part,: was planning to get a ps3 since I owned the ps2 (wish had a Xbox due to online) thinking that it was the system to own, then death blowto consumers $599(lol apparently to PS3 exclusive studios too, ex: metal gear) and I was lol yeah right bought box never regretted it.
  • I don't think we will see a price or third party games tomorrow, that is E3 stuff. Sony should focus on showing on how great the next gen will be on their exclusive games and the new features. I am really excited about tomorrow since it will be the first glimpse to the next gen, that is awesome. This is my Will-make-me-scream list for tomorrow - The last Guardian as a launch title - Ps4 have some Android stuff functionality - Uncharted 4 - Infamous 3 - Kaya ps3 demo from Quantic dream made a full game for ps4
