Comparing The Open World Of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Some fans might be worried about The Witcher 3's leap to an open world, that the tightly-constructed narrative of previous entries might be sacrificed to appease a growing trend in the industry. Rest assured, the development team at CD Projekt RED is confident that they have created the perfect fusion of exploration and narrative.

Watch the video interview to hear the game's director and lead quest designer talk about converting the world of The Witcher and what lessons they have learned from games like Skyrim, Fallout: New Vegas, and Assassin's Creed 3.

  • I can't wait. Loved the first one to bits, but my hardware cant handle Assassin of Kings... :( Hope i'll get a proper PC before the last in the series get out.. It hurts every day to have Witcher 2 on steam, but not being able to play it at all. And i wont play it on xbox. I REFUSE! (not that i have anything against consoles at all. I actually play most of my games on xbox, hence the bad pc hardware.) It's just a PC game this one.. I'll have to wait, impaciently..
  • If CDProjectRED can effectively combine the choice-driven and impactful story of a BioWare game, while also having the freedom and exploration of a BGS game, this could be close to the perfect RPG many want. It's certainly easier said than done, but I'm curious as to how CDPR will pull it off.

  • A larger-than-Skyrim world is interesting to me. Skyrim's one of my top 10, maybe 5, games ever, and my favorite thing is the giant world. I'll keep my eye on their promise. However, I disagree with them that Fallout: New Vegas was missing something. I thought Obsidian nailed the feel of the game, which was have Fallout 3, but with a fun western vibe.
  • Might be the first open world game to have awesome combat, a deep and player impacted story and characters that you remember for more than 10 minutes. Oh and no more "Collect 10 x for person x in x town." quests.

No load times is REALLY awesome as well. I hope they tone down on the nudity so that more copies are sold.
  • Given that a lack of expansiveness in the game world was one of the very few faults I had with The Witcher 2, I have to say I'm really loving the idea of a more open world.

  • I just started the first one yesterday after beating the second one a couple of times....Loving it so much! I hope they are able to merge the feel of the first and second one seamlessly, cause they have differing styles but still feel like The Witcher...First one feels more like the book too which I am also currently reading, Good Stuff!!!

  • Tired of the Defiance ad before every video.... BUT! Excited for this game!
  • I pressed play on the video thinking "No, you shouldn't strive to make an open world game 'like Skyrim and AC3' you should strive to make an open world 'better than Skyrim and AC3'". I walked away very pleased. Looking forward to this game so much more now. If only I could actually play the first one. Runs like crap on my computer even at low settings.
  • god damn Europeans and your logic "everyone likes open world games, i think we should go this way" yes, yes you should :D:D
  • Very excited about Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.

As soon as I heard about Witcher 3 I reloaded Witcher 1 again.

  • Oh man...I can't freaking wait.

  • I loved Witcher and I really liked Skyrim so they've bought me already. And if they will fix not-perfect story and quests and dungeons of Skyrim and put some really engaging stuff in this big world... Perfect RPG.

  • this game is going to be amazing... but I hope they bring it to a console.... Also was it just me or was that video mainly them criticizing other games and not really talking about the Witcher 3? lol
  • I really don't like Open-World games. They never clicked with me and the best I've played was Red Dead Redemption. Depending on how you look at it, Batman: Arkham City and Silent Hill: Downpour as well but I viewed them as pseudo-open world games rather than a full on headline. I don't know, probably won't matter to me since this game will be for next gen consoles and PC. Which is too bad because I just beat the Wtcher 2 last night and absolutely loved it. And I wonder how save imports will work for those that played it on the 360.
  • I think that the reason we all love Skyrim (despite its plentiful flaws) us that it nailed its main source of engagement: exploration. I did not play Skyrim for its combat (it was meh), its story (mostly bad, some meh), or its characters (what characters?). The reason Skyrim is so engaging is the curiosity and wonder you feel going through the world which drives continuous play. If CDProjectRed can pull off that sense of wonder and exploration while maintaining the Witcher's strengths, it has the potential to be the new bar for RPGs.

Also, I hope there is a creation kit-like modding tool for this game. The potential for never ending play is there, but is hard to get without a constant stream of content (which modding provides).

  • nothing could really top New Vegas for me. The combination of writing, world building, depth, replayability, and everything else just clicks for me. It's one of my favorite games all time.
  • What they have learned is that this will be epic indeed.

  • Awesome I cant wait.

  • Can't wait for this
