What's Next For Wii U?

The Wii U has gotten off to a bit of a slow start, with the release of new games slowing down to a trickle in recent months. However, Nintendo has plenty planned for 2013. We break down what new games and services players can expect as the second wave of Wii U software approaches.

Note: This article originally appeared in the February issue of Game Informer magazine (issue 238), but has been updated with new information from Nintendo's Wii U Direct press conference.

Pikmin 3
Spring

Pikmin 3 was one of the most celebrated showings at Nintendo's E3 2012 press conference. As in previous installments, players command groups of the adorable creatures to solve puzzles, traverse the environment, and defeat bosses. Curiously, Nintendo recommends playing Pikmin 3 with a Wii remote and nunchuk, but confirmed it can also be played exclusively with the GamePad.

Rayman Legends
February 26

Announced as a Wii U exclusive, Rayman Legends is the direct sequel to 2011's acclaimed Rayman Origins. Similar to New Super Mario Bros. U, Rayman Legends allows a fifth player to aid friends by triggering interactive objects, nabbing collectibles, and tripping up enemies via the GamePad's touchscreen.

Aliens: Colonial Marines
February 12

Gearbox Software has been vocal in its enthusiasm for Wii U, and Aliens: Colonial Marines makes it easy to see why. The GamePad's touchscreen is perfect for the franchise, functioning as an in-game map and replicating the series' iconic motion tracker.

Wii Fit U
Summer

One of the first games demoed by Nintendo for its new system, Wii Fit U allows players to use the GamePad in conjunction with the Wii Balance Board to perform a variety of exercise-focused minigames. Nintendo announced Wii Fit U as a "launch window" title, which means players should have it by March at the latest.

Lego City Undercover
March 18

The latest Lego game from Traveller's Tales breaks with tradition by giving players an open-world city to explore. As Officer Chase McCain, players bust criminals and Lego blocks alike, while donning a variety of costumes that unlock unique abilities.

The Wonderful 101
Early 2013

Formerly known as Project P-100, Platinum Games' The Wonderful 101 tasks players with repelling alien invaders via a swarm of superheroes. The cartoony brawler allows you to recruit new citizens to strengthen your mob and perform united super attacks by swiping gestures on the GamePad's touchscreen.

Coming Up Next: Nintendo pushes the boundaries of what gamers can do with their fingers, teases a JRPG mash-up, and announces two no-brainers fans will go bonkers over...

  • I'm most excited about the new SSB! And the new Zelda game isn't far behind that.
  • "Trickled down in resents months" LOL it makes it sound like the Wii U has been out for a while. LOL Its only been 3 months. I like that.
  • very nice, good to see they have games lined up for this year.gonna have to get a wii U soon because i don't want to miss out!
  • So excited for X and Wind Waker! :D
  • waiting for the "untitled zelda game" and the SMT x FE crossover
  • Even if the Wii U is outdated, and will be even more outdated the moment the newest Xbox and PS4 come out; the Wii U will just be something special. I am very excited to see what else comes out of this system, with all its awesome games. Go Nintendo!
  • WHERE ARE THE NEW IPS?
  • interested in super smash and wind waker HD other than that still waiting on a Rune Factory, Harvest Moon and Pokemon game for it. Oh and Animal Crossing of course.
  • I more excited for most of the first party games.
  • I'm tempted to buy a Wii U but the most enticing games are still under working titles and more games aren't coming until around March at the earliest. A little disappointing.
  • i REALLY could not give 2 sh*ts about the little handheld screen thing, or any of that move-your-arms-while-gaming milarkee, but i'm seriously considering this console, probably will wait a while for price to come down and all these games to start coming out
  • Man... I luv gaming.

  • Can't wait for WWHD, new zelda, yoshi yarn, pikmin, and possibly mario galaxy.  I may have to buy a Wii U this year :P

  • "The Wii U got off to a slow start..." starts the article. Compared to what, exactly? The Xbox 360, which got off to a SLOWER start? The PS3, which also started slower? The 3DS or Vita, both of which started vastly slower than the Wii U? Is this article trying to convince us or the writer himself, Jeff? Because the only console in recent history to get off to a faster start, sales-wise, was the Wii. And the only one that got off to a better start software-wise was nothing outside of maybe the PS3, which had the benefit of many X360 ports when it launched.
  • VAPOR WARE THE CONSOLE (JK...NOT REALLY THOUGH)
  • I'm thinking of getting Rayman Legends opening day because I absolutely loved the last one! Sadly, I still only have one WiiU game, ZombiU, and yet the whole WiiU experience has been a blast with a great game!
  • Whats the game in the first picture?
  • What game is the screenshot on the top of the first page?
  • Already Nintendo is throwing out the punches with its new console. A lot of good looking games I see on here, and that to me is enough for me to warrant a purchase. I hope Yarn Yoshi releases this year, and if not oh well. I am definitely buying a WiiU this fall, because already Nintendo has impressed me with what is going to be in store for us fans.
  • Aka, it sounds awesome. Mario, Zelda, Fire Emblem... there's just one thing missing. Metroid.
