Pokémon Company International Plays X And Y Close To The Chest

We just found out about Pokémon X and Y this morning, but Pokémon company international is already out and about answering questions… sort of.

We asked J.C. Smith, the director of consumer marketing for the Pokémon company international, about the gameplay, the graphics, how many new Pokémon we can expect to see, and a lot more about for Pokémon X and Y. He wasn't ready to answer most of our specific questions, but he did offer a few tidbits and promised that new information on the game is coming as early as tomorrow.

Smith also assured us that Takao Unno, director of Black and White 2, and Junichi Masuda, producer of Black and White 2, enjoyed our previous interview where we asked a number of bizarre questions. We were sure that we would never be allowed to speak to them again.

Keep an eye out tomorrow for more information on Pokémon X and Y, and in the meantime check out Smith's answers below.

Pokémon X and Y looks like it could be a good fit for console as well. Why not make a Wii U version?

I can’t speak to the specifics, but traditionally Game Freak has always loved the game to be on a portable device because of the communication, trading, and the experience of taking this adventure with you. That’s why they’ve always prioritized a portable version of the game first. They’ve always liked what you can do in the real world with that.

Why haven’t we seen a console Pokémon?

It comes down to what the creators want to do. Every time I’ve heard them talk about it, it’s been about the portable experience, taking the adventure with you, being able to share it with friends, communicate, trade, battle – really encouraging that interaction

Do X and Y have a greater meaning?

I’ve heard discussion online about it after the trailer we rolled out today, but I can tell you that it makes localization very easy for this international title because all the titles worldwide, except for Japan, are Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. It adds to the international feel of the game, giving it the same title. It’s another way to unify the experience for people.

So it doesn’t have anything to do with chromosomes?

I’m not sure. That’s something I’m sure GameFreak will answer soon.

You will still be able to pick between male and female avatars, correct?

Yes, the titles they have given us are the hero and the heroine. Yes, it is certainly going to have that functionality.

Who are you picking as your starter?

I was just talking about that. For the past couple games I’ve been water or grass. I actually want to get back to fire so I am thinking Fennekin is going to be my guy.

Fennekin looks cool. I feel like Chespin sort of looks like he has a shower cap on.

Ha ha, there’s a lot of conversation about Fennekin and Froakie, but I haven’t heard as  much about Chespin. I’m sure there will be camps for each one like there always is.

  • So pumped for this game! The legendaries looks so cool and I'm glad it's for 3DS.
  • I'm seriously considering getting a 3DS for this.
  • Chespin looks like a brown Oshawott wearing a hairnet.
  • I imagine they're really tired of answering the "Why not have Pokemon on consoles" question. But, yeah, Fennekin is the best starter of the three. I've noticed that the internet loves that particular one as well, but all three actually look like they belong in the Pokemon universe.
And doesn't everyone play close to the chest when they just announce a game?
  • Want. Want. Want. Want. Want. Want. Want. Want. Want. Want. Want. Want. Want. Want. Want. Want.
  • For me Pokemon died after Emerald. Firered & Leafgreen were great and brought a high dose of nostalgia, but I never made the jump to any of the DS games. I'll still play some of the pre-DS games when I'm bored or on a long trip, but the Pokemon in later games seemed pretty lame.

However, X & Y pique my interest so whenever my little sister gets them I might have to check em' out.

  • If only Nintendo would have them make 3D versions of Kanto,Johto and Hoenn (Preferably in one gigantic game)...I don't like the new generations of Pokemon :(
  • FROAKIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • only game I've ever bought a Nintendo hand held for. didn't get the last one though, kind of tired of it. They need to shake it up more and make it a little less kid focused, i wouldn't be surprised if the audience isn't children anymore. Fans have grown.
  • ZZZzzz...

  • kinda a lame interview

  • They should make a Wii U version, or just make it a Wii U exclusive. It would really boost hardware sales, and at this point, the Wii U needs it more than the 3DS.
  • RIP pokemon. The blood lines have gotten weak with the ongoing generations.
  • I really hate everything they have shown us about this game so far.
  • well i have been playing since the very first game, no reason to stop now
  • XYZ axis=they're directions, because of the 3D.
  • Mod
New art style reminds me a lot of Dragon Quest IX. I dig the move into full 3D and the new starters are all pretty okay (I'm actually leaning toward the Grass starter; I usually prefer Water, except for Cyndaquil). I'm excited as usual, but I want to see what's really new with this entry. Black and White let me down a bit in that regard.
  • We'll see how this goes. Pokemon kinda lost its luster after HeartGold and SoulSilver. This does look like a fairly good game, though.
  • I'm with you Kyle, foxy is the way to go.

  • Looks like i'll never get the chance to start a game with an Eevee. Anyways, I'm also going with the fire starter. It looks like a sexy mix of both Zorua and Vulpix. I'll also probably get version Y, because that legendary looks awesome. October can't come soon enough!
