Test Chamber – Devil May Cry

Before our official review hits next week, we sit down with the Devil May Cry demo and talk about what developer Ninja Theory brings to this anticipated reboot.

Reiner handles hosting and I handle playing – though simultaneously talking and killing demons turns out to be harder than I thought. We chat about the series' history, where the new DMC falls in the spectrum of difficulty, and whether concerns about Dante's redesign are warranted.

If you like what you see, mark your calendar: Devil May Cry comes out on January 15, and our review will be online on January 14.

  • Game looks really solid and really fun. Can't wait for this next week.
  • Great, first Test Chamber in awhile, and its a game I don't care about. Aw well.
  • I thought the demo was fun, but the gameplay isn't as smooth as I would like.
  • Good to see. I've been meaning to download the demo, but figured I'd wait on the game to be released. My main concern with this game was, as Joe mentioned, I didn't find Heavenly Sword's combat particularly good. Namely, it feel far too "rock, paper, scissors". A stance had to be used against a certain enemy type and while I beat HS, I can't say it was entirely enjoyable. Its good to see the mobility of DMC3:SE and DMC4 is retained in regards to getting in quick to your enemy. The core combat seems solid (gonna need to get "used" to the trigger modifiers and lack of a lock on) however I am curious if the game suffers from the terrible camera work that plagued the platforming sections of DMC.

The reboot's narrative has also piqued my interest. Can't wait for the review as I wanna know if I'll sink as much time into it as I did DMC3 and DMC3:SE at over 100hours.
  • I thought the demo was really smooth and fun, but I'll probably end up renting it, doesn't seem like a day one purchase for me.
  • I am actually interested in this game now. looks like a lot of fun.

  • I thought it was kinda meh.

  • So this is what my Uncle was talking about? I think this looks promising, considering that the combat still looks familiar. I just wonder what the story is.

  • Geez, I can't believe the game is only a couple of weeks away and I've yet to play the demo.
  • Good enough for me.

  • I liked the demo but i will just rent the game cause too many other games i want.

  • After much skepticism, I turned the corner after playing the demo. I've played all previous entries in the DMC franchise and enjoyed all and from what I saw so far I believe this will be a great entry, we shall see.

  • Looks surprisingly all right, can't wait to see that my fears are unfounded when it releases.

  • Holster for sword? No magnetic sword action? -insert fan outcry-
  • doesnt look fun like even the 4th one...the gameplay is slow too. i will try it when it is cheap....ill stick with the older ones

  • Gameplay looks fun, if derivative.  Environments look OK, but I did like how they changed up part way through.

    Story, unsurprisingly, seems infantile.

I don't think this will re-enliven the franchise like Capcom hopes.

  • This looks really good, even with Dante's dumb visual makeover.

  • I never had any issue with platforming in the demo, in fact I found them to be like a more fluid version of Alice: Madness Return's platfroming. I'm also really surprised to say that I had an easier time with the demo as a DMC virgin than Joe seemed to be in the video. *Shrug* If I hadn't pre-ordered Bioshock Infinite, I would have probably pre-ordered this game. The demo felt fantastic to me, like something out of a dream. The combat was so fluid and varied, even though I didn't know a single combo before playing.
  • I've been playinng this demo non-stop. This game is going to be SO good! I can't wait!

  • Why not do a Test Chamber on Anarchy Reigns? Its weird that you guys are doing the demo for this and it comes out next week? Wouldn't that mean you're gonna do two for it?

Its a weird choice because marketing for Anarchy Reigns is nonexistent and you guys are bringing attention to a game that already has a lot of attention.....also most of the compliments you're giving this game DMC4 already had. Hell and Hell mode was in 4 and vast upgrades was expected. Whats new and is it an improvement?
