The lights are on
Last year will go down as one of the better years in video games, with titles like Halo 4, Far Cry 3, and The Walking Dead coming out among many others. But before we turn the page on 2012, here's a look at the games that readers voted as their favorites of the year.
Our Reader Games of the Year poll garnered 56,415 respondents, with the two stipulations being people could vote multiple times, and that they didn't have to vote on every category.
Here are the list of winners in each category, but you can also check out the full survey below.

Had a feeling halo 4 would be in there.
I still think Assassin's Creed 3 is the Game of the Year. Yes, there are bugs, but I only encountered 3 obvious ones, otherwise, it worked perfect for me. Everyone seems to not like the story at all. Think about it this way. It was set in the American Revolution, something that we've never seen in any game before from what I recall. And it didn't glorify the time like you see in history books, it actually does set in some truths that most Americans don't want to hear, especially about Washington, by the way, I'm American too. Connor is actually a character we all relate to in my book. He knows what's right and wrong, but is also confused at times about what he should do, as we all have that problem once in a while. He knows his destiny and does it because he wants to protect his village, a great sacrifice in the order. He is betrayed in many ways, conflicted about Haytham and his role in the story, and yet throughout it all, he does what is necessary to achieve freedom for the Colonies which in the end only hurts his village more as they cast them from the land. It wasn't going to be a happy ending for Connor, but he knows one day, it will change. Combine that with the open world with literally TONS of side quest, including raising your new home with the settlers and great weapons, I think it's Game of the Year. No disrespect to Halo or Mass Effect, I just think that's more fan boy style from G.I. than deserving praise. But I will say, Mass Effect 3 was EPIC.
Mass Effect 2 and 3 BARELY qualify as RPGs.....
Halo 4 really? Well I won't sweat it too much considering Mario Party actually won
Cannot believe Lollipop Chainsaw got only 57 votes!
I didn't vote, because I haven't played any of the 2012 titles. But I can't wait to get into some Borderlands 2 and Halo 4. I'd say you guys did well, with what I've read about all of these titles...
Liberation seriously beat Paper Mario? Recount.
yay it seem SoulCalibur V got some attention
Picking New Super Mario Bros U over Rayman Origins is just plain silly.
given that I only play PS3 games, this list means nothing.
I do have AC III and find it most enjoyable. There does seem to be an overload of side missions,as my one gripe.
How is Fortune Street not even a contender for best Wii Exclusive? By far the best Wii game I've played this year.
Mario Party over Xeno....guess that goes to show you what people play today.
Xenoblade was EASILY my GOTY, it just doesn't get any respect because it's on Wii, and people consider the Wii a "kiddie" system even though it's far from it.
wow...Mario Party 9 wins over Xenoblade...fail...
Other than that, I agree with just about everything here. I think that Xcom should have won GOTY though...but Halo is a good choice...
Too bad Far Cry 3 didn't win anything from the readers but that's the price of releasing a game in December I guess.
The Walking Dead was definitely game of the year for me. I have never cried after a video game ending ever.
The Walking Dead is definitely game of the year for me, never have I cried about a video game ending and cared about the characters so much.
"best RPG: Mass Effect 3"
gets me every time. Far Cry 3 is about as much of an RPG
