Reader Games Of The Year 2012

Last year will go down as one of the better years in video games, with titles like Halo 4, Far Cry 3, and The Walking Dead coming out among many others. But before we turn the page on 2012, here's a look at the games that readers voted as their favorites of the year.

Our Reader Games of the Year poll garnered 56,415 respondents, with the two stipulations being people could vote multiple times, and that they didn't have to vote on every category.

Here are the list of winners in each category, but you can also check out the full survey below.

  • good picks! even though wasn't expecting Mario Party 9

  • Last year was a really sh***y year for video games.
  • Oddly enough it is a decently matched opinions.

  • Clearly the well-known name of Assassin's Creed game won over the lesser-known, but far better, Zero's Escape game.

  • I hope this year in gaming is better than the piece of *** 2012.
  • ME in any statistics?!?!? It seems GI staff would even suck some *&^%&* for a buck ;) GI Staff - you are a disgrace!
  • Halo. I think I'm the only FPS fan that simply doesn't care about this game. Maybe it's time I pick it back up and give it another go huh?

  • Horrible, horrible picks for alot of these categories. Halo 4?!?, come one people lets get over the Halo already can we.

  • Mario party 9?!?!?! *Face palm*
  • In honor of Mario Party 9 winning the wii exclusive award, I think the game informer staff should have to do a 2 hour replay of it.

  • Personally, I agree with these opinions alot more

  • My personal games of the year are as follows:

Game of the Year overall: Far Cry 3

    Shooter: Far Cry 3

    Action: Assassin's Creed 3

    RPG: Mass Effect 3

    Fighter: Tekkan Tag Tournament 2

    Puzzle Fez

  • Really happy to see Halo 4 up there, Take that CoD fans lol

  • No way is Halo 4 GOTY in my book. I've been having a blast playing it so don't get wrong, I do think it is a great game. But it just feels to dated & uninspired to me to get GOTY, I mean other than some new enemies it's the same game it has been. I'd put Halo 4 in my top ten of this year but no higher than 6th or 7th.

  • Stupid Nintendo fanboys. How could ANYONE pick another pointless cookie-cutter Mario Party game over an absolutely brilliant original work like Xenoblade Chronicles? Honestly now, never have I been more certain that my analysis of Nintendo's "unfortunate dealings with 3rd party companies" been more accurate--it's not the fault of the 3rd party developers, it's the Nintendo fanboys too afraid to step out from under their asinine Mario-Zelda-Pokemon safety net. And the saddest part is that Xenoblade isn't even a third party game. All these fanboys care about is Mario-Mario-Mario. No wonder 3rd party devs routinely abandon Nintendo consoles after 2 or 3 years. Nintendo could make a game called "Mario Turd" where all you do is control Mario picking up *** in a park, and Nintendo fans would buy it in droves.
  • Cool.  One or two that I voted for made it.

  • Cool! Street Fighter X TEKKEN didn't make this list! just for that! this list is the best!!

  • It's a shame that Fall of Cybertron didn't win anything. It was a fantastic game that many people overlooked. I know there were a ton of games out last year that were great, and this is one of them. It's all good though. Looking forward to the next installment...
  • I notice that Far Cry 3 isnt on this list, but it was by far my favorite experience of the year.
