2012 Action Game Of The Year Awards

As is usually the case, many of the year's biggest titles were first-person shooters. Despite this, 2012 also saw the release of several fantastic games that fit more snugly under the action umbrella. Read on to discover Game Informer's picks for our favorite action experiences of the year.

Best Story: Dishonored

Dishonored begins with a bang, with the protagonist being framed for the assassination of an empress and tossed into prison. Stepping into the shoes of the nimble Corvo Attano, gamers were tasked with taking out several high-ranking officials of Dunwall with the help of an underground resistance group. It's a classic revenge story, and each kill on your way to those responsible had an impact on the player and Corvo's quest for justice.

Best Graphics: Journey

In a year filled with the ultra-realistic visual style of Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Assassin's Creed III, and Far Cry 3, it's a breath of fresh air to see Journey's gorgeous world. Its sand-filled world may be sparsely populated, but every inch of it is vivid and beautiful. If you've played the game, you no doubt remember the breathtaking visual of the sun reflecting off the sand as you slide down a massive hill.

Best Multiplayer: Assassin's Creed III

Ever since multiplayer was introduced to the series in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, fans have loved the ability to sneak up on unsuspecting opponents. With Ubisoft's newest blockbuster, a new cooperative Wolfpack mode was introduced, as well as the team-based Domination mode. Third-person action games aren't usually the source of many great multiplayer experiences, but the Assassin's Creed series has bucked the trend once again.

  • I'm a big fan of action games, but dishonored disappointed me. Not bad game, but for me this is only clone of bioshock + Half Life 2 elements. This is not bad game. Just nothing "amazing". Best story? No, sorry. Best story, gameplay, graphic (taste) game of 2012 is The Walking Dead. Yeah, I never suspected, that best game for me will be adventure, but is.
  • I wasn't impressed with Dishonored's story so for that to win Best Story is a big surprise to me.

  • WOW! If you want to win an award for your game, all you have to do is make your protagonist look mysterious and give him/her a hood. I'll remember that !
  • Wonderful list of Action GOTY's! I completely agree with Dishonored being my action GOTY. I had so much fun with that game, loved the story, the setting, and the gameplay. It was fantastic.

  • Dishonored was a great game, but it had a boring story; come now, GI.
  • I loved AC1-ACR, but I haven't played AC3 in weeks. I finished ACR in about 6 days and I just can't quite put my finger on why I haven't returned to AC3.

  • I loved Dishonored so I'm not surprised it got AGOTY.

  • There are two kinds of Dishonored players; the kind who did nothing at all besides murder their way through the story, finishing the game in five hours flat, and the kind who actually committed themselves the way you should to an RPG, who explored, Hearted and looted their way through Dunwall, discovering an amazingly creative Lovecraftian Steampunk world along the way. The former believe the game to have a boring generic plot, while the latter, such as myself, were well-rewarded for their interest.

Summary: If you didn't like Dishonored's story, it's your own damn fault for not exploring.

  • Really it's geetng worse and worse... Journey best graphics ? Please you got to be kidding... What about AC3 ? And iMO Resident Evil 6 is the best action game this year.
  • Story, but I have to disagree with some of these. To me, even though Dishonored had an amazing setting, but I've seen similar ways in Borderlands for some reason. And it's not a giant world that you can explore and the only way you affect it is by the way you complete missions. Assassin's Creed 3 not only did something we've never seen, recapture Colonial America, but it gave a wide open world to explore, to hunt, to capture, to find treasure, to bring in settlers to the Homestead who became apart of Connor's story which I felt was more powerful than Dishonored. Don't get me wrong, Dishonored was a great game and could be blueprint for combat in future Elder Scrolls game since Bethesda was involved, but when a game actually makes me play it again, which is VERY rare, I find it amazing. Assassin's Creed 3 has done that for me. I feel the only reason AC 3 isn't being recognized as highly is because they've released one each year for four years now.

  • Interesting winners....

  • wanted to play dishonored so badly, but i don't like first person action games, get nausea from playing in first-person mode...but congrats!

  • Don't get me wrong, Dishonored was a great game, i can't wait for a sequel.

But Assassin's Creed 3 was amazing. I loved the story and the action was much more complicated and exciting. Can anyone back me up?

  • I would have picked Journey as "Best Downloadable"

  • So many people seem really disappointed with Dishonored. Yet, it received  action GOTY awards from so many reputable sources. I enjoyed the game. However, I always wonder if I missed some great flaw when there is so much hate that I don't get.
