Why Dishonored Is One Of The Best Games Of 2012

A wild swing away from the sequelitis that dominated 2012, Dishonored from Arkane Studios and Bethesda empowered players with an alluring combinations of tactics, powers, and tools. This new IP was featured as our cover story from August 2011 (click here to enter the content-filled hub from our studio visit) and it had a couple of editors fighting for it to be named as the Game of the Year.

Watch the video below to watch Game Informer's Andrew Reiner and Matt Bertz talk about their experience with Dishonored and what made it stand out in a year of excellent releases.

For another discussion focusing on the ending of the game, check out our episode of Spoiled featuring Andy McNamara.

  • See, I played it...but I found it to be far too boring. I forced myself through it. The art style was wonderful, controls felt tight but the story itself was terrible, and so was the dialogue. Plus, the upgrades and the skills were minuscule and bland.
  • Dishonored's plot twists were completely predictable and most unfortunately, the game discouraged you from using its powerful suite of abilities lest you create too much chaos and ruin the ending. I enjoyed it, but there were too many aspects that made it a poor man's BioShock. It was also lacking an "I'm impressed" moment which I think is a must for Game of the Year. My game of the year so far is Mass Effect 3, but I have yet to play Journey, AC3, or Far Cry 3, so that could change.
  • It was a good game, but I couldn't force myself to play for a second time. The story was boring and the conclusion wasn't very satisfying.

  • I should play this.  Looks like fun but there was just too much going on.

You know what else looks cool?  That Tail of the Sun hoodie.  And it's available now, oh man...

  • I liked the game, it was really good. The only problem i had was it was to short.

Mass effect 3 was a good choice for GOTY though, it was better

  • I would disagree. The gameplay was pretty good, but the story was severely lacking.

  • Gameplay was amazing, the story was crap. The story was almost non-existent and their were too many plot holes for a game that has very little plot.

  • I never picked this game up. Personally, I don't see the appeal :S

  • THANK YOU

  • I keep hearing the story was not all that great, so I will probably wait till this one drops in price.

  • Surprised that Mass Effect 3 still won, even after this.
  • I 100% percent agree with the comments from both gentlemen.  This game completely turned my head and gave me a complete experience and satisfaction where I played the game twice back to back.  it was like no other and the last game that made feel that way was the first Bioshock.  The game surpassed my expectations and exposed me to new and exciting things that could be done with a game.

It is one of my favorite games of all time.  Hell I even loved the music!!!  This will definitely be added to the "don't' even think of asking me to borrow that game" shelf!!!!

  • Reasons why Dishonored is a good game:

    - Awesome Whalepunk level design

    - Perfect stealth/combat gameplay

    - A bit of replay value (Not much)

Only problem is that they should have used a better writer for the story.

  • I always liked Andrew Reiner and his reviews , great game by the way

  • To be honest, I wasn't quite feeling this game. I mean, I liked the art style, and stealth mechanics in a FPS is always a soft spot for me (for some reason :P), but playing the game was a drag. I understand this is a game about opression, but jeez, it was way too depressing for me. Still, a pretty great game, especially for a new IP. Just not the best I've played...maybe because I got spoiled from Farcry 3 (yeah, I picked up Dishonored pretty late :P).

  • i feel like this was a good game. it was kind of short and was alot like a bioshock game. i mean its like the same people that made bioshock just decided they where going to change things up alittle. the powers you have are like the plasmids. the only real difference is the clear concentration on stealth. im not saying its a clear rip off of bioshock but it feels like ive picked up and played it befor. i mean in ways its a good thing. its like milk and cookies. u love them so much. it tastes good. but its the same milk and cookies. except maby they added some chocolate to the milk. i just wish they could have taken it further away from the bioshock feel. its a good idea and the story is good but it needed something else to make it feel like it was a new idea. and to ad to this if i wanted to play something like bioshock ill go pick up bioshock and play it again. it should have been call bioshock 3. lol just jokeing. but it feels like it was set in the bioshock world. they need to push it further to turn it into being there own world befor it can be game of the year material
  • agree with you guys, i picked mass effect 3 for my GOTY BUT this game is on par with ME3, and diablo 3, as my 3 best games of the year, dishonored is freaking fantastic and reminded me of the glory days of deus ex and thief (although i never get into the first thief games, only played 3 but i liked it), need more stealth games with lots of choice!

  • Very excited to play this game. Unfortunately I've been too tied up with a bunch of other titles :(

  • This was a great game with some significant conceptual flaws. My biggest problem with the game was how it almost punishes you for being good at the game and using all the various powers at your disposal. Also, I like silent protagonists when they are done well, but Corvo's silence caused me to disconnect from the plot.

  • got it for 25 dollars around black friday. havent had time to play it yet
