I Don't Want To Think About Star Wars: Battlefront III Anymore

Some things you just can't let go. Our current fascination with the unreleased Star Wars: Battlefront III is just one example throughout video game history of gamers' love affair with what could of been and what likely will never be. I understand how easy it is to pine for a title you can't play, but I wish it would stop.

Maybe I'm just too practical, but I don't see anything to be gained by wishing for what's not going to be. Even in this day of Kickstarter and success stories like Xenoblade Chronicles finally being released for Wii owners, one thing that gets me is that if the game actually did come out with another developer other than Free Radical attached, then what? It will be too easy in that case to look at every "mistake" in the New Battlefront III and compare it to some hypothetical game that Free Radical never made in the first place, and fool ourselves into thinking that Free Radical would have done things different and/or better. And the likelihood of Free Rad's version somehow coming out are next to zero, BTW.

There's so much that we don't know about the situation surrounding the game's development and demise. While I definitely love a good behind-the-scenes expose as much as the next person, the recent back-and-forth between Free Radical Steve Ellis and the anonymous LucasArts employee only goes to show that none of us know how the sausage is really made.

I don't fault anyone for their sincerity in wanting Star Wars: Battlefront III to see the light of day in the manner they think would be best, or people's optimism that they can influence the process in a positive manner. I certainly have opinions about how any given game could be better. The sticky thing with Battlefront III is that nobody knows were to start. Without knowing what the game would been like, how its gameplay would have felt, AI acted, feature-set performed, and any number of other variables that come into play during development, it can be foolish to project our own wishes onto an unfinished slate.

I'm pretty confident that one day we'll see another Battlefront title – it's a LucasArts property that's pretty good, which is something of a rarity over there. Until then, I'm going to spend my time thinking about games I'm already playing or ones that I actually have a chance of getting my hands on in the near future.

Life's too damn short to be trapped in delusions of grandeur.

  • I dunno about you lot but i'm putting "Died waiting for Battlefront 3" on my tombstone. That is, behind Half-Life 3. And Timesplitters 4. GAAAAAH!
  • As much as I want this game, I agree.
  • Well the one determining factor would be does Disney have the rights to the games now? Or was it just the movies and stuff?
  • but that is the good thing because we know so little it puts us in a hypothetical critical shield in the sense  we cannot be dissatisfied with it considering nothing was known about the alpha and if the put it on kickstarter the site will crash from the traffic

  • And what a Crash Bandicoot HD?
  • I feel ya Kato.
  • I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, but I will admit to spending more than a couple hours trouncing people in Battlefront 1. It was almost exactly what I wanted in a video game: All out war, baby. Needless to say, if there ever is a Battlefront 3 released, I will most definitely get it. And it'll come, eventually. But I think that we, as gamers, should just let it go for now. Like Matt Kato said, there are more tangible games and products to look forward to. If we keep pressuring for a developer to pick this one up, we could just end up with another Duke Nukem Forever on our hands. And nobody wants that for Battlefront 3.
  • There is always Battlefront II for Steam with mods.
  • I'm still waiting for Republic Commando 2.... -_-
  • i wonder if i should play the first 2...
  • I will never understand the obsession with this game. I enjoyed Battlefront 1-2. I don't pine over them like some gamers, but I enjoyed it.
  • Screw Battlefront 3. Where's my Advent Rising sequel?
  • So true, Kato, so true

  • the only Star Wars game i cared for was KOTOR I-II,Battlefront was an okay Battlefront 2 was felt dated, seeing how Lucas Arts franchises dont get better with new installments... People love to romaniticize about what might have been.

  • I felt the same way about 38 Studios and Project Copernicus. It's time to move on and, if Battlefront III is ever to get made, just start fresh with a new studio.

May I suggest TimeGate Studios? They did the excellent, excellent Section 8 Prejudice. I believe Gearbox is using them for Aliens: Colonial Marines' multiplayer suite as well. They could knock it out of the park, especially if they got to team up with the excellent artists at LucasArts/ILM/Lucasfilm animation that collabo on all their games now, apparently.

I'm sure that, since Disney Interactive is now in charge of Lucasarts technically, that Battlefront III is back on the table. Disney wants more game franchises that are guaranteed million sellers (Epic Mickey ain't a sure thing). Here's hoping they do things right next time.

Oh, and here's hoping Free Radical/Crytek UK works better these days. If they "Pull a Haze" or "Pull a Battlefront" with THQ, they could tank the publisher.
  • What was the purpose of even writing this article? So that you can have people agree with you? I don't get it. Of course Battlefront III won't come out but I don't know why you are bothered by other people wanting it to come out. How does it hurt you, Mr Kato, when someone sees more info coming in about the unreleased BF III, sighs, and just wishes it would have come out. And if you're complaining about the influx of new information about the title, why? It CERTAINLY doesn't hurt you or your magazine if something this hot comes out of the industry and it's an interesting look at what can happen during the development of a game. Even a game with such high hopes as BFIII. So once again, I seriously don't see why you have such an issue with people wanting a BFIII; other than your, totally irrelevant, pragmatism.
  • Agreed. I want SWB3 very badly, but it will likely never happen.

  • Man, i don't care. BF2 was amazing, and BF3 would've been better. Whatever happened to Pandemic? They would've handled it better than Free Radical.
  • bringing it up in an article is counter productive to not wanting to hear about it
  • Were all in a nut shell rite now of wandering when ever that game is going to come out, but it is good to keep the hype up, people who make the game will see that ALOT of people are still wanting a third installment of Battlefront, the game would be a huge success and people know it. Even other Star Wars games like Republic Commando 2 or Jedi Knight Jedi Acadamy 2, the possiblities are nedless when it comes to Star Wars video games, and if there is a problem, its definently personal issues with the developers.
