My Wii U Love Affair

The Wii U is not without its shortcomings, but I have already found a lot to love.

I spent a lot of time getting the Wii U updated and transferring over my Wii data, as most Wii U owners did on its first day of life. Just as I was ready to jump in, my wife’s parents arrived to stay with us during the Thanksgiving break. I shut everything down to greet my relatives and listen to them marvel at how adorable the baby had become since the last time they saw her.

Shortly after everyone got settled in, I got a text from Bryan Vore asking me to add him on his Wii U friends list. I drafted a text to send back to him that I couldn’t at the moment because I had family over. I didn’t want to be rude and turn on the TV and start playing video games after they had driven approximately 1,300 miles to come visit us. Before I hit send, however, I realized that turning on the TV to play a console video game was now a thing of the past. I stealthily turned on the GamePad, added Bryan to my friends list, and turned the system off without even exiting the conversation, and no one was the wiser. It helped that there was a cute baby distracting everyone with her recently mastered walking skills.

Later that night, when we were looking for things to entertain ourselves, I suggested checking out the new Wii U. My father-in-law and I each grabbed Wii Remotes, and I gave my one-year-old toddler the GamePad as an experiment. She’s young, but she has at least a small understanding of the mechanics of touch screens. I used to hand her my iPhone, but I can’t do that anymore now that she has mastered the unlock and has a penchant for rearranging my applications. Under my wife and mother-in-law’s watchful eyes, the baby gripped the stylus in a stabbing motion and began attacking the screen, randomly placing blocks for Mario and Luigi to jump on. She didn’t provide any real help (and was mostly a hindrance, in fact) and though she didn’t understand what she was doing, I still feel like I played my first cooperative video game with my daughter.

Pictured above: Not my daughter's hands.

Beyond the advantages of having a Wii U in the house with toddler, like being able to play Call of Duty without displaying a montage of violence on the giant glowing screen for my daughter to absorb, I have been enjoying the Miiverse. Before the Wii U was set to release, I knew next to nothing about the Miiverse. I assumed it would fall under the same umbrella of the Wii’s online features that sounded cool on paper, but never really met fruition. Very quickly though, I found myself absorbed in what the service had to offer. It’s like a Twitter devoted entirely to video games with the added advantage of drawings, without the crassness of an online community. The best part about it is that it presents itself with very little need for active participation.

I love seeing the impressive drawings that accompany random communities. I laughed out loud when I saw a detailed drawing of Hank Hill from King of the Hill in the Netflix community proudly proclaiming, “King of the Hill and Netflix? Awesome!” It’s all so random and weird, and I get a taste of it just by turning on my system.

There are even gameplay implications that I can’t wait to see grow. I booted up Batman: Arkham City, and jumped in the community just to see what was going on, and someone posted the following image on the board:

The code worked, and I ran around Arkham City as Batman from The Dark Knight Returns for a few hours without ever having to jump online to look up the code.

None of the Wii U’s games have jumped out at me as required ownership or reasons to buy the system, but for the type of gamer I am, in the household I live in, the Wii U is exactly what I want. It’s a system that allows me to play console games without interrupting what is currently happening on the television, and without exposing my daughter to the adult games I want to be playing, but don’t think she is ready for quite yet. Also, it plays Nintendo games, which tend to be quite good.

  • Batman does not suck! While I don't like the games and the new movies as much as some... Frank Miller is the man, and so is Bruce Wayne! :D lol hooray for opinions

  • Really nice article Kyle!

I too am enjoying my time on my Wii U, especially in the Miiverse. I was stuck in a certain portion of ZombiU, posted a pic of where I was, and within minutes got a nice response. I think the way Nintendo has handled their online community has turned out nicely, and it's not a community full of jerks. I mean yeah it has its' idiots, but about 99% of the ppl on there are very helpful and passionate gamers, it's a nice breath of fresh air. I'm not really concerned about games at this point to be honest. I'm having plenty of fun on ZombiU and Mario, but I am also getting caught up on some terrific Wii titles...I just finished Fragile Dreams, and it is an amazing RPG, if you have a Wii then go play it NOW. By the time I'm caught up and done with these games Monster Hunter Ultimate, and Rayman will be out so that will kill quite a bit of time, especially Ultimate considering I have 700+ hours on my Tri character.

In closing I would like to say I haven't had this much fun with a console out of the gate since N64 (my favorite system ever). I would definitely like the E-Shop and Virtual Console to be combined, and also make it easier to add friends (these are simple fixes). Also if you call yourself a "hardcore" gamer, and then go and by saying that Nintendo consoles aren't "hardcore" then you yourself are NOT a hardcore gamer. A REAL hardcore gamer is somebody who likes a nice game even if the graphics aren't great, and no matter what system it's on.

  • Now hearing about he implications and how well it can work it seems pretty awesome . I think mug forward extra connectivity is what consoles are goin to strive for . So I think we will see this Miiverse mimicked in Sony and Microsoft's next outing; at least I think so. Regardless I prefer aging without much help, I like trying to figure things out myself and on top of that I don't have money for it esp when my PS3 works just fine . Also I'm looking forward more to the more powerful potential of the Ps4 and the 720.
  • I'm in the same boat as you Mr. Hilliard. I myself have a 5 year old and we had a blast playing Mario and Nintendo Land this past weekend. I'm really welcoming this change in the gaming world.

  • I want a wii u really bad!!!!

  • I will not buy a Wii U until I see a decent Metroid or Zelda game. Those are the only games that would sell me a Wii U.
  • The MiiVerse moderators need to step it up. How on earth did a Batman Sucks comment get by them?

  • Batman sucks?!?!
  • Your daughter will be a huge gamer sir. My first co-op game with my daughter was zelda the four swords when she was four and got a dsi for her birthday from her grandad. We went through all of it and she loved every bit of it and is now the biggest five year old zelda fan I know. There is just no words to describe how awesome it is to watch your kids face light up when introduced to some game you already love and is entirely new to them. Have fun with your kid sir because soon she'll grow up and you are going to have to buy a shotty to ward off all those crazy teenagers. I'm already applying for my gun license in case any of those kindergardeners get too close to my little angel. Death to all the would be boyfriends. Maybe that last part was a bit extreme maybe we'll settle on castration.
  • I am so addicted to the Miiverse that it's not even funny. A social network like this one that's all about video games???! One that you can draw on?! Forget Facebook!

  • From reading various articles the Miiverse actually shows great potential.

  • Holy hell, I've been trying to find a Wii U just about anywhere...kind of crazy how NOBODY has it in stock (even Gamestop told me that back orders are as backed up as 2 weeks). I tried a store display, and loved the controller...I'm just hoping it's not another Wii situation where I didn't get mine until 2 years after launch :P.
  • The Wii U is freaking awesome. If you have any doubts about it, then actually try it out. You will end up liking it.

  • I love my Wii U. The fact that last night I could sit and watch the Broncos/Raiders game while playing SMBU was so awesome.

  • My daughters are 4 years old and now they complete their "lessons" on time with the reward of pulling me away from my home office to play Nin'Tendo Land.

They also like me and my wife to sit together and co-op play Mario while they help us on the GamePad by making steps or tapping enemies. They started out as a hindrance more than help early on which lead to some hilarious deaths for me or wife, but slowly and surely they are improving in their instincts and are getting to be pretty powerful helpers.

Aside from those two games... all the rest of my games for Wii U are too violent and I wish the Wii U had the type of headset my Sony Playstation 3 has which would take over 100% of sound and also have Mic built in for on-line games where I use voice-chat.

The sound of violent games pass through walls and doors in my house even if I have kids be in their room to play those types of games on my Wii U. I suppose I could play just on the GamePad, but I really prefer to play on my 55" wall-mounted HDTV :)
  • I can't wait to see how Microsoft ties Smartglass and Surface into Xbox. I'm currently praying to the gamer gods they will have support for android tablets as well. I think this Idea is long over due. As a married man nothing gets me more hard then the hope I'll be able to play console games while she hogs the tv watching OWN!!!

  • I picked up my wiiU 32 gig at launch and I must say that since I got the NES with Robby the Robot and Lightgun this is the best Nintendo ever..

    Thanks again Nintendo....

  • I am not sold. yay the console is flashy. yay. but it better have some better games because that starting price makes me a little sick to my stomach. I have 2 kids. Do you think they'll be excited to fight over one gamepad till they sell them separately?! I'm sure they'll love that!
