Replay – Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

The gaming world is eagerly awaiting Rockstar's return to San Andreas, so the Replay crew decided to take a trip back to 2004's massive GTA title. Playing as Carl "CJ" Johnson, this entry in the acclaimed series was one of the most ambitious games on the Playstation 2. Featuring three distinct cities and plenty of countryside in between, it encouraged plenty of exploration in its sprawling world. How does Rockstar's final PS2 installment fare all these years later?

Watch below to see Andrew Reiner, Matt Bertz, Kyle Hilliard, and myself take a trip back to the early 90s.

  • Top 10 Game Of All Time!...I Wish CJ Could Appear In GTA V...That Would Be EPIC
  • GTA San Andreas was the first game I bought day 1. Vice City was my intro to GTA. So Awesome.
  • What is it with GI and that damn Turtle Beach commercial?
  • Dis gun b gud.
  • Wow, you got this one up early! I also never finished the Zero missions, flying that stupid RC plane is WAAAAY different than any other air-vehicle in the game. Seeing Dan play that mission reminded me of how painfully frustrated I got, but seeing Dan get so lost at the airport and not knowing how to turn the plane reminded me of how frustrated I got with him during the Half-Life Super Replay. Anyway, great games.
  • Such a great game, classic at least. Can't wait for gta5

  • no video for me.
Edit: never mind just had to refresh a few times
  • My favorite GTA

  • I remember skipping class to play San Andreas when it first came out.  Memories...

  • Give us an Armored Core Replay!

  • oh san andreas... you were epic in your time.

  • Ah, GTA. It's a series I've never been able to get into. Rockstar games in general I'm not too fond of. But I did really like Bully and would like to see a Bully 2 at some point.
  • How could you play GTA: SA as a Replay and NOT play co-op.  I strongly disagree with Dan on that feature.  Two people can cause a massive amount of chaos in that mode and it was a blast.

  • oh wow, this is the mission that made me give up on the game...i HATED this mission....ugh bad memories....

  • If they can fix the horribly broken control scheme in GTA then V will be great. If they don't create some parity between themselves and games that aren't broken though... I couldn't care less. That means no more tapping a button to run, that mechanic is horrendously archaic. It makes moving around with any kind of fidelity impossible and it makes the chase scenes feel like quicktime events since all you're doing is jamming on the A button. A cover system that isn't impossible to work. An aiming system isn't broken. Lock on for vehicle combat, a lot of those vehicle combat missions are terrible because you can't hit anything. I quit Lost and the Damned because the pipe bomb mission is one of the worst things I've ever played in my life. A better car camera that doesn't float directly behind the vehicle so you can't see what's in front of it or at the very least the ability to set that yourself. Basically I'm saying I would love GTA a lot more if the controls weren't busted. Give me the ability to map out my own buttons and mechanics that don't make me feel like I have to fight the game just to walk through a building.
  • I bought San Andreas a few months ago on XBLA but eventually got bored and stopped playing. It was a fun game though, except that RC mission. I totally understand why Hanson would quit the game at that point lol. What I liked best about San Andreas was the characters. Samuel L Jackson as Tenpenny, the blind leader of the Asian mafia, CJ's crazy girlfriend in the country, and the Eazy E replica, Ryder. I may replay this game someday, hopefully I can get my save file back.
  • This game, way too many memories. Co-op with a friend, flying and bombing with jets, parachuting, and lets not forget that fantastic soundtrack that included "Today Was a Good Day."

And I also disliked the Zero missions. Love David Cross (despite the Alvin & The Chipmunks movies), but I hated that mission where you drive that RC plane and destroy planes.
  • I personally find GTA offensive.
  • Dan Ryckert saving the world, one bus full of dead prostitutes at a time.
  • Vice City is still my favorite GTA for many reasons, one being Love Fist.
