Test Chamber – ZombiU

We already reviewed Wii U launch title ZombiU. Despite already sharing our opinion on the game, we thought it would be a good idea to show you what to expect if you pick it up and how the GamePad's features are used.

Join Jeff Cork, intern Mike Mahardy, and myself as we sit down with Ubisoft's zombie apocalypse games. I touch on some of my frustrations with the game's controls scheme and concepts, but we also discuss local multiplayer.

  • O.O That screenshot...

    Edit: Btw, video's not loading

    Edit 2: K, thanks
  • So many Test Chambers...

  • Such a terrible game...
  • Seems like a cool idea, but I'll stick with Dead Island.
  • What's weird is GI and IGN gave it "bad" reviews. Destructoid and Edge loved it. Everybody you talk to on Miiverse CAN'T GET ENOUGH. It's one of those you either like it or you don't games. Myself I think it's a great game, a 7.75 or solid 8/10. If you want a run and gun CoD, Left 4 Dead, Dead Island, Dead Rising type zombie game then this isn't for you. If you want a slow paced, dark, SURVIVAL horror then I say get it.

Most people saying it's horrible haven't even played it. I'm really glad you did a test chamber on it though.

Also if you don't like the controls (I didn't at first). Just turn up the sensitivity that really makes it quite smooth to be honest. Also the scanning thing is NOWHERE near as bad as this guy makes it out to be. I respect the opinion of the individual playing here, but most items "shine" just like Resident Evil so you don't have to constantly scan. You also don't just stand in the middle of the room and scan it 360 degrees, I mean just walk up to an object and pick it up, you don't have to mark it on your map.

Anyways I do think some of the complaints are fair, but they're not nearly as bad as he makes it sound in the beginning of the video. If you think it looks nice then pick it up, don't just base your views off of 1 guy. That's a big issue with gamers today is they rely too heavily on reviews from people. Other than that I loved the test chamber, nice work guys.
  • I wish they had handled the PSABR testchamber like this.
  • Honestly, like, really honestly, this... doesn't look so bad to me. I mean, some of the combat looked tedious, and the environments sounded kind of annoying, but it doesn't seem like such a bad game. Oh well, opinions and all that. I'll pick this up if the price drops.
  • cant wait to get this game.

  • Well Mario will have to save Nintendo... again
  • HA! They seemed kind of awkward. Maybe having their faces filmed isn't to their liking.

  • This game is great... I think the guy in this video just likes to whine to much Lol The graphics aren't as sharp as they could be but the game does look lived in that matters WAY more to me. You can enter some rooms and piece together a story of how the people in the room died which is a huge plus in my books. I will say I didn't like the filter either. I feel that this game could have been better(more melee weapons, a bit more polish on some textures, more animations and a better sound design) but for what it is, a launch title, I think it is fantastic. It shows off what the system can do in an entertaining way and PS3 and 360 can't really say that for them selves in their launches imo.
  • Good. I wanted to see this in action.

EDIT: After watching it, it seems very rough.
  • seems like a game i would play

  • My impression is that this is a very solid game, and that the GI review is plagued by the typical "I don' wanna pway wiff anyting but an Xbox contwoller!" attitude towards any Wii, Wii U, Kinect, DS, 3DS, Vita, or Move game. I like GI, but this mag/site has a history of being too closed minded to even bother to learn or utilize any control scheme outside of an Xbox 360 controller. Even when said device was well utilized to facilitate deeper, more involved, and more interesting gameplay. Yes, an inventory would be faster if you could pause the game and slowly select your items like every other game out there, but that's not the point of ZombiU's system, which is to make the experience a bit more realistic and to enhance the tension and atmosphere. So far, I'm liking this better than the droll "here comes another brainless shooting gallery" coupled with "ooh another jump scare I saw coming" gameplay that was a detriment to Dead Space 2. The atmosphere is brilliant and tense. Frankly, this isn't Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising, Resident Evil, or Dead Space--it wasn't mean to be any of those, and it does manage to successfully deliver a new experience in the clogged zombie gaming world. The more I play it, the more I like how the controls are integrated into the game.
  • I'm glad GI has these test chambers so we can see first-hand what the game is like. Reviews are a good source to go off of when considering game purchases but they are still just the opinion of one person.

For example, GI gave Silent Hill: Downpour a not-so-great review but both me and my brother both thought it was one of the best Silent Hill games ever to come out.

In the end it is still a matter of personal perspective but these Test Chambers can definitely help gamers to make up their minds over whether or not they want to give a particular game a shot.

  • I can see why this game is getting mixed reactions
  • Been waiting for this test chamber as, previously, I was waiting for this game to release. Now I no longer have a burning desire to buy a Wii U
  • Considering this was pretty much the only reason I even looked at the Wii U, it's a shame it turned out the way it is. There's a definite difference between survival horror and surviving the game itself. Old horror titles like SH and RE backed up their then innovative (it was brand new back then) control schemes and styles with great scares and story line (a midst some laughable voice acting.) There's also a difference between being scared of fighting due to controls and being bored of combat due to controls. I also find it funny how quickly everyone turns on Tim for not enjoying the game, considering he's obviously GIs biggest horror fan. I agree with you Tim, it has great concepts with sub-par execution.
  • i am making a story  like this. check it out on my blog.

  • I hope they make a sequel and get rid of some of the problems noted because it is a cool idea for a game.
