This Week's Difficult Choice

by Mike Mahardy on Oct 08, 2012 at 08:25 AM

The fall season is never a forgiving time for gamers who strive to keep up with every new release. On days such as tomorrow, that possibility gets thrown out the window.

Dishonored and XCOM: Enemy Unknown are receiving positive reviews across the board, and it seems like everyone is talking about one or the other. Whereas Dishonored encourages experimentation between stealth and confrontation, XCOM places strategy and tactics at the forefront of its gameplay.

Both titles are providing gamers with a fresh experience, but their origins are quite different. As a reboot of a classic PC title, XCOM is bringing in prior fans and newcomers alike. The strategic thinking at the core of its design has been revamped to include console gamers, while also ensuring that that the original’s faithful will enjoy it just as much.

Dishonored, on the other hand, is a brand new property released late in this console cycle. In a time period usually reserved for sequels of proven franchises, Dishonored is being praised for setting a precedent in the creative space.

Do these design aspects influence which game you’ll be playing tomorrow? Would you rather take a risk with Dishonored and try something new, or are you gravitating towards the tried and true strategic depth of XCOM? Alternatively, are you just focusing on gameplay?
