Does The Public Know About Wii U?

We here in the enthusiast press often find ourselves in an information bubble. We have known about the Wii U since E3 2011, but we have always been curious about how much the larger consuming public knows about Nintendo's next console.

This is a far cry from a scientific polling, but we sent associate editor Ben Reeves to walk the streets of Minneapolis, Minnesota and talk to random people about their experience with video games and what they know about the Wii U. Their answers may surprise you.

  • Ben Reeves is awesome! That one part where the guy said he played Kinectimals on the Wii was hilarious.
  • 1:56 lol. don't think that guy was playing a video game XD (come on people. it's comedy gold)
  • This is a series I would continue to watch, great segment!
  • I tell people all the time about the Wii U and they think its either 1) a controller for the original wii or 2) have no idea that a new wii is coming out. >.
  • Not surprising. Nintendo hasn't done any advertising beyond the Internet for the Wii U that ive noticed. And frankly, I just don't think that the tablet controller will have the same appeal that the Wii's remote/motion control had.
  • Holy hell, that was hilarious!

  • While I understand that the system is sold out already, Nintendo has to be somewhat concerned with all of the recent mainstream confusion over the Wii U. Right?
  • Good job Gameinformer. You did the market research for Nintendo that they SHOULD have done 6-12 months ago.
  • This is one example of why I'm glad Nintendo has better gamer focus on us gamers this time around. People wil find out about the WiiU soon enough when they're in stores.
  • I too have played Kinectimals on the wii.
  • ah, this was hilarious. The comments from the average consumer really get to me sometimes xD

  • Ugh. I can't believe Nintendo put their faith in these kinds of people. They decided to abandon hardcore Nintendo fans for people who wouldn't know a game if you smacked them in the face with it. How did they think these clueless consumers would even know a new console was on the way let alone feel the need to buy it. This pandering to casual "gamers" is a disturbing trend that hopefully comes to an abrubt halt when the WiiU doesn't live up to expectations.
  • I feel like I don't know much about the Wii u and I am on game sites everyday and trying to pre order one.

  • Aside from the hilarity of Ben Reeves interacting with random people, this video just disappoints me. Not because of the video itself, but Nintendo has done nothing to sell people other than gamers on the Wii U. I mean, the console's literally just one month away. They need to hurry up and start pumping out some commercials.
  • I don't give a flying f**k if the public doesn't know about the Wii U. Yeah, its sad how not that many people, WHO ARE NOT EVEN REAL GAMERS TO BEGIN WITH, don't know about the Wii U. But whatever. I'm still getting the system.
  • "Kinectimals on Wii?"

    "Yeah"

  • And my Adobe all of a sudden crashed. Worked on XCOM...

EDIT: Restarted browser, and it worked. Nice ending Ben.
  • Well, I don't think anything the public says can surprise me anymore, but I'll give it a shot. They didn't count the Wii as a video game... wow. Nintendo, please remember those of us who want to play games.
  • Let's actually go to a real city and ask people, ok GameInformer? ;)
  • come on Nintendo spread the word boys
