Replay – Killer 7

Aram Jabbari is possibly Replay's most popular guest of all time. Atlus' PR manager manages to find any excuse to come visit the Game Informer office. He masquerades these visits as appointments to show us new Atlus game, but we secretly believe he just can't get enough of Replay. He's back again to take a look at one of Capcom's "Capcom 5" GameCube games, Killer 7.

Join Aram, Andrew Reiner, Joe Juba, and myself as we dive into the PS2 version of this bizarre, cel-shaded adventure. No Saturday is complete without some confusing control schemes and opaque allies in bondage gear.

Check out the Replay hub to watch every episode ever.

This game is easily in my Top 20 of all time and I'm really happy to see it get a second look, but wow, that was rough. The controls are different and you have to take some time to adjust to them and experiment to figure out exactly how they work, but once you do the game is a really smooth play.

Honestly, I don't think this game would be as compelling if the controls weren't so unusual. Part of what makes combat so tense is that you can't just circle-strafe the Heaven's Smile like you could in an ordinary FPS. You have to proceed cautiously and listen for their laughter and watch your surroundings (especially as the monster types get more varied). It also streamlines the pacing; you never get that feeling of "is there some door I haven't found yet?" since the game defines all the paths for you. I think it'd make a good Super Replay candidate, personally.

(Aram Jabbari really likes Kinect, huh)
  • Yet another example of why the GC was one of the greatest Nintendo systems to date.(It's my personal favorite of all time)
  • I loved Killer 7. Can't wait to watch.

  • Sweet, I have been curious about this game for years. I have never seen any of it so this will be great!

  • Any Replay with Aram is a good replay.

  • Woulda thought you guys were going to do a replay on resident evil considering RE6 comes out next tuesday
  • I was really hoping Killer 7 would be a Super Replay.

I actually pulled this game out of my closet last night to play it again, now that Borderlands 2 is gone.
  • So much Aram, and yet you still haven't done an Atlus RPG replay. My vote still goes to Odin Sphere.
  • Does Aram fly over to GI like once a week? Seriously, he's everywhere(not complaining though)!

  • Have to say Tim is completely wrong about the controls, unless the PS2 version is messed up, the aiming is completely fine, it's just at the beginning of the game hitting weak points is pretty hard before leveling up your skills. It's one of the few games were reading the manual is mandatory in understanding how to play, the tutorial really doesn't do it.
  • Aram again? I'm just going to pretend he did get hired. :D

  • this makes me smile. a replay of a great game that everyone should have bought. one of suda 51's best works ever. though the game is better on gamecube. this is game that is on so may great plains of existence.
  • Aram! As for Killer 7, it looks a little too weird for me.

  • Wow, I feel like I'm on a trip right now. I liked Dark Angel back in the day, haha.
  • I loved this game back when I had it. I would love to see yo guys do a replay of jet force gemini.
  • Nice replay

  • I don't blame Tim one bit. I bought this game with high hopes, due to an abnormally high review from a rival gaming site. Made it to the parking lot and put it up for auction on eBay.
  • Killer 7 was actually ported to the PS2 late in the system life-cycle. I got it, but could never get into it because of the unique control scheme.
  • I love that genre of movie the "Dance Heart" genre, they're always great. Aram (or "***-monster" as he's called when he's visiting Japan) is good as always, and Reiner proves to his subordanants why he's the boss and they're still just editors by taking out the ceiling monster with ease.
